How could he pay on time if the tolls he owed never showed up online? He tried paying on time. It didn't work out. So who's at fault?

I stand corrected about the FTB going after you, apparently they can- a user was kind enough to message me with the code section that permits it, but I am wondering how often that is enforced, my son has parted out a few cars that quit running, he never did anything about the registration and he has never been contacted by DMV or the FTB- but clearly according to what I was sent it is the law

Thank you guys for the suggestions!
It looks like I've got to bite the bullet. If it passes smog (doing that this week) I guess the DMV is in luck, they'll get my money. If it doesn't, I will certainly look into retiring it or parting it out, because I'm not putting more money into a car with 188000 miles. I may also eat my hat here and check out the smog help program that someone mentioned.
I'm not super concerned about my credit (that sounds bad, but hey, honesty is the best policy), so you know where they can shove their collection attempts. I truly didn't intend to break any laws or anything--the collection site was having some problems with letting people go free around that time, and I figured it'd had that mistake. I've definitely learned my lesson and will call in the future if they mess anything up, but jeez. You wouldn't think it'd snowball into this craziness. I wasn't able to get the tags replaced because I have been so...crazy...poor in the past year, and I'm about to drop rent money on this thing.
I'm actually a Cal resident, going to school in Nevada, not the other way around. But, alas, I need my car, so I guess I'll see what I can do here.
Thanks again!!

First of all, 188K miles is not too bad. If your car is fuel injected, and properly maintained, you can run it to 288K before you'll need to replace your engine or transmission. As the old adage goes, it's cheaper to keep her. Don't think for a second that 188K means the end of your car's life. There are so many service vehicles (work trucks, taxis, buses, etc.) still in operation with far more miles than 188K.

Secondly, this is America. Are you telling me that you haven't called and BITCHED to someone about this? ***** to the toll people (call their office, speak to managers and supervisors). Write to them. Call the mayor's office. Call the local news people. Call the governor's office. Play up the fact that you're a poor student being taken to the ringer for THEIR mistake. Continue to call, write and *****. Believe me, it works. You have power. Only use it when you are right, but when you are right and are being wronged, ***** until you are made whole. I've done it so many times. It's your right as an American. Now get off your ass and start bitching! I am totally serious.

That's right. beatch, whine, and rant. That's the American way these days (unfortunately). How times have changed.

Someone who drives around on expired tags, who doesn't pay tolls and parking tickets... not someone who's going to be seen as sympathetic. The "poor student" schtick won't hunt.

your screwed.might try getting a lier to go to bat for you in court...but that will cost ten times the taxes the state wants.

only way to avoid taxes in CA is to not be in the state.

taxes, fines, fees, all are taxes. any and all moneys going to the state are taxes. no mater how they pimp up a name.
