My family is moving to Fairfield, and for a number of reasons prefer to be in the area of the mall. We've heard it's shady. What does that mean? Would it be unsafe for a family to live?

It's not an area I'd recommend for children. The area is known for gang activity. Is being near a mall what's important? You could live in Vacaville next door, which is safer and more family-friendly, and be right at the outlet malls.

The area north of the mall is the nice part of Fairfield. Do these houses look like gang areas?

Salishan Court, Fairfield CA For Sale - Trulia

Waring Place, Fairfield CA For Sale - Trulia

The Cardinal Plan in Gardens at Paradise Crest, Fairfield CA - Trulia

Brudenell Drive, Fairfield CA For Sale - Trulia

Palmer Circle, Fairfield CA For Sale - Trulia

The area of Fairfield that I would avoid living in is the area around N. Texas St. south of Travis.

The residential areas off of Texas Street are really bad. There are also some apartments/condos near Tabor that I am not comfortable around after dark. Honestly I can't think of any place in Fairfield that I would consider living in unless it's on the North side of the Freeway. My granddaughter went to school in downtown Fairfield for a few months and it was really bad; the schools across the freeway are much better.

if you want to live in Fairfield, live west of I-80, near Travis AFB, north of Cement Hill Rd, or in Green Valley/Cordelia. those areas are the safest parts of FF. or you could live in Vacaville (nice town with lots of shopping options).
