The muggings over the past few winters seemed to be concentrated on the north end of Midtown, generally north of J Street. South of R Street in Newton Booth has seemed pretty safe to me in recent years, and I don't hear much about crime problems, officially or from other residents.

Not sure where it was "super safe" 20 years ago--there were still meth labs in the neighborhood then.

If you want super safe, move to Folsom, Davis or Granite Bay. If you want to live in an urban neighborhood, you are going to have urban issues.

I live in the area where the muggings and assaults happened (a couple were within a few blocks of me). We did alter our habits for a while, but honestly we almost never worry about crime here. In 16 years in this part of midtown (21 years overall) we've had three car break-ins, and for at least one of those I think we'd accidentally left it unlocked. Otherwise we've never experienced any crime here. I walk around alone in the dark (with my dog, but he is not very intimidating) on a daily basis and it's not even an issue.
