Hello! My daughter and I are planning a visit next year. We'll be traveling across the country for the first time to see family I haven't seen in 20 years! We'd like to stay at a hotel which we don't plan on being in much, but we'd like to be walking distance to some restaurants and shops. I'm debating to rent a car when we arrive or not rent a car? We can Uber or have our family pick us up.

Is Sacramento a walkable city? What are some safe nice hotels you would recommend? Thank you!

Midtown is walkable and the Capitol District is also. Do not miss the Capitol tour- the building IS a museum. We used to stay in the hotel right near the Railroad Museum but I can' t recall the name. You'll have fun!

If it's your goal to just see the downtown areas and not the outlying suburbs like Folsom,Auburn,Roseville, or Camino (Apple Hill), then you could do downtown in two- three days. It's Sacramento, there's not THAT much to see downtown, and there's plenty of ways to get around including Uber, Lyft, taxi, scooter, and bike rentals. The places most tourists hit up are: Old Sacramento, Evangeline's, Railroad museum, Crocker Art museum, homeless living on 12th street, hit some restaurants, the Capital, Sutters Fort, Native American History museum, go to Tahoe or Napa instead, Delta King Paddlewheel, Old Sac under ground tour. That's pretty much it.

Some hotels for your consideration in Downtown/Midtown would be the Embassy Suites adjacent to Old Sac, Vagabond Inn across from the Amtrak depot (Sacramento Valley Station), Holiday Inn Downtown-Arena, the Sawyer Hotel and the Citizen Hotel.

1. It is very easy to Uber from Sacramento International Airport to Downtown.

2. Very Nice to Nice Hotels Downtown: ; Sawyer Hotel on J Street and 5th; Citizen Hotel J Street and 10th; Hyatt Hotel at Capitol Park L Street and 12th. Marriott Residence Inn across from Capital Park L Street and 15th; Sheraton J Street and 11th; Embassy Suites next to Sacramento River and Old Sacramento on Capital Mall and 2nd Street; Best Western near H Street and 11th St

3. Very Nice Hotel not Downtown: South Area on the Sacramento River: The Westin Riverside Drive and the Sutteville Exit off of I-5

4. Nice Hotel closest to Sacramento Airport: New Hilton Garden Inn I-5 and Del Paso exit (they have a Park and Fly package)

5. Nice Hotel near Sacramento State University: New Hampton Inn and Suites Highway 50 and 65th Street.

6. Cheap Hotel Midtown/Downtown: Motel 6 (30th Street and N Street)

DO NOT STAY AT THE MOTELS ON RICHARDS BLVD near Downtown; Sadly homeless all over that street now.
