This has got to be the last year I do the heat here! I live in Butte County (Chico area) and I am very heat intolerant. I want to move to the state of Washington but I can't afford to drive all the way up there and scout in my crappy car. I'm on Section 8, so would need to move my voucher. Is there any place cooler that I can afford? I lived in Santa Rosa once and although hot, it seemed at least that the summers were shorter but they treated people on benefits badly there. No medical care. I'm 61 and have Medicare/Medi-Cal. Any suggestions are appreciated to get out of the heat.

You might try asking the same question on the retirement forum. I know there have been at least a couple of people who were on Section 8 who have asked questions on that forum.

I don't know for sure, but when we lived in Oregon it seemed that the Section 8 benefits were better than in California. This was from talking with a neighbor and one other person, so I don't have a lot of data. The weather is warm in the summer, but not Chico hot by any means. Also, the summers didn't seem as long. The rest of the year is cool and drizzly with a couple of cold months and occasional snow, which makes everything look so pretty.

I called their Housing Authority and they are not taking any more ported vouchers (moved vouchers).

Thanks; yeah I also found a woman who talks a lot about Crescent City and I found out that no dentists there take Medi-Cal, so this is all valuable information for me of places not to look at.

Sac summers are horrible. I don't blame you.

Our summers are awesome, but unfortunately the OP doesn't live in Sacramento, they live near Chico.

That's happening in a lot of places. I know Vallejo no longer accepts ported vouchers, but you might try Benicia, it's not very warm there, I'm just not sure what their section 8 inventory is like

Just a cold drink and some shade, and nights that cool off nicely. Makes the transition from "unbearable" to "bearable."
