Hey! I stayed in Grass Valley for a month last year and I fell in love with the area. But I wondered, what type of industry is there for people to be able to afford living there?

It's the type of town I could imagine myself living in, in the future (5-10 years from now) ..but where are the jobs? I know there's some retail and food service..anything else that wasn't obvious to my eye?

My fiance is a civil carpenter by trade..I wonder if there would be anything up his alley in that area , and hopefully in that area in the future!

So, what type of profitable work exists in that area? Please don't reply with "nothing" because I know that's not true otherwise no one would live there. I saw quite a mix of people there..ages, socioeconomic class, etc..

Hmmm..I didnt meet many tweakers while I was there. Im from a place where that actually IS true..I can see the real difference. Seemed to be mostly middle or upper middle class people with some sort of legal income.

Anyone else?

The Grass Valley Group is still in Nevada City, though I don't know how many people are working out of that office.

I have a relative in nearby Penn Valley, and he commutes to Sacramento, as do most of his neighbors.

There used to be a big company up around there, don't remember exactly what, had friends who worked there, but I think its downsized. Maybe this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grass_..._%28company%29

Oh, here's some other employers: Raley's, Safeway, K-Mart, Starbucks, GNC, Jamba Juice, JC Penny, and BriarPatch, as well as fast-food chain restaurants. Other major employers include Nevada Union High School, Nevada Irrigation District, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital

Otherwise people are retired, or have jobs where they can work from home.

There's a plan here in Nevada County to build 300+ low income apartments. Also some assisted living apts so there will be construction work. After that, its spotty for carpenters.

There is a cluster of companies in that area that spun off the Grass Valley Group in the area of Video Production. Grass Valley is nice area, but its a cultural mishmash of hippie stoners, yuppie software people and rural gunning owning republican types depending on how broadly you define the area.
