Hi,

I'm going to be moving to the Sacramento area for the next ~5 years for work and am looking to purchase a house that does not have too bad of a commute to East Sacramento, where I will be working. While the roaring forties look great, unfortunately, they are a bit outside of my budget.

Realistically, I could buy or rent, but, were I to buy, would be looking at houses in 300-400k range. Schools are not much of a concern as we do not have kids, nor is public transportation. What I really want is a short commute and a relatively safe neighborhood where I don't have to worry about having my car or house broken into.

Thanks for any advice you have on neighborhoods or where I should be looking!

I'd suggest something that is central located, in the event that your job changes. I'd suggest that you rent first, and then check out the various neighborhoods. East Sac is a great place to get a first timers feel for Sacramento.

With that budget you can afford to live in east sac/midtown/and La Riviera.

Indeed--look at the "Thrifty Thirties" (from Alhambra Boulevard to 39th Street), Elmhurst (south of Hwy 50 along T Street from 39th to about 50th) or the Alhambra Triangle (south of R Street between 30th Street and Hwy 50) for places that are more affordable than East Sacramento/McKinley Park but within easy walking distance.
