We are a late 40's, early 50's professional Bay Area couple who has an option to move to Sacramento. My job is in technical sales working from a home office and my wife has an offer in Sacramento (Downtown) that we are considering. Enjoy the Bay Area, but would consider giving Sacramento a try.

We are looking for an upper-middle class, unpretentious, safe, diverse, convenient neighborhood that has ameniities within a one mile walking distance, or 5 minutes by car. Amenities would be: grocery shopping, health care, diverse restaurant selection, banks, shopping, etc

No children and budget would be under 600K. Probably need a 1400-2000 sq ft house. Any areas come to mind?

East Sac or McKinley Park

Depending where you live, it's walking distance to everything you listed -- cute shops, banks, drugstores, lots of restuarants, cool coffee shops (Chocolate Fish, Tupelo along with Starbucks & Peets), Trader Joes, Safeway and Save Mart, multiple parks.
It's an ideal location with fantastic tree coverage, and lots of community activities. There is the annual Christmas lights on 41st & T St in Elmhurst (just south of East Sac, btwn 50 & UCDMC), halloween decorations & the 4th of July parade.

It's really the perfect location for commuting since it's a backwards commute. And it's super easy to drive to downtown, don't even have to get on the freeway.

It's beautiful, and peaceful. I lived there when I first live in Sacramento. Loved it.

Yeah, look at the 95816-95819 ZIP codes (eastern Midtown through East Sacramento.) If you'd rather leave the car at home, both are great places for biking, and there is relatively good east-west transit access (high frequency bus on J Street, light rail on R Street) to get to work. The farther east you go, the less walkable things are, but still generally pretty easy to get around. Your budget should be just right for that neck of the woods.

Yes, you can have all that in East Sac. Midtown (where I live) is even more walkable/bikable, but is more mixed income-wise. Land Park is also a gorgeous neighborhood, but is farther from amenities.

Thanks, keep the suggestions coming!

Curious: what are the demographics of Folsom, Rancho Cordova, Citrus Heights, Roseville and Carmichael?
Is the commute pattern from these places into Downtown in the morning and back out in the afternoon?

Folsom and El Dorado Hills (a couple miles further East on highway 50) are both within your budget and criteria. Many people commute to work in downtown Sac with commute patterns being into the city in the morning and out of the city in the afternoon/early evening.

I would probably recommend East Sacramento would be a great neighborhood for you both to check out. There are restaurants around J St, Alhambra, and on Folsom blvd, along with several great grocery stores such as Safeway, Trader Joe's and the Co-op.
