Actually Stockton is too upscale for tribal casinos, it doesn't warrant the comparison.

This will no doubt accelerate the white flight that started over 10 years ago. Now the last few middle class neighborhoods can experience creeping blight from the south in addition to the north. And don't forget the congestion! All those traffic funds are going to Biz 80 and elsewhere.

Is there any hope at all for that miserable city? I honestly feel bad/embarrassed for the people I meet who live there. The only appropriate response to "I live in Elk Grove" is, "oh... sorry".

Is there an article elsewhere on the subject which doesn't involve a paywall?

Wilton Rancheria chooses Elk Grove site for resort, casino

Site of half-built mall off Highway 99 is tribe’s preferred location
Howard Hughes Corp. plans outlet mall on remaining portion of parcel
Tribe seeks to take land into trust

The Wilton Rancheria announced Thursday that it has chosen the site of a half-built mall in Elk Grove as the preferred location for its planned resort and casino.

The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs will be asked to designate the 35.9-acre parcel along Highway 99 as the preferred alternative in the environmental impact statement, prepared in response to the tribe’s application to have the land taken into trust for the project.

“This is an important milestone for the members of Wilton Rancheria, the community of Elk Grove and the region’s economy,” the tribe’s chairman, Raymond C. Hitchcock, said in a written statement. “The resort and casino project will generate approximately 2,000 direct jobs, provide annual revenue for vital services such as police, fire, roads and schools, and support other community needs.”

The tribe previously filed an application to take into trust a parcel west of Highway 99, north of Galt. But the more than $30 million cost of constructing an overpass at Mingo Road “presented an insurmountable economic challenge,” Hitchcock said.

The Howard Hughes Corp., which owns the Elk Grove property, has entered into an option agreement for the sale of land to Wilton Rancheria. The Howard Hughes Corp. plans to build the Outlet Collection at Elk Grove on the remaining portion of the parcel, according to a news release.

The tribe intends to schedule a town-hall-style meeting in Elk Grove to present its plans to the community, solicit comment and respond to questions and concerns. No date has been set for the meeting.

The more than 700 members of the Wilton Rancheria are descendants of the Plains and Sierra Miwok, who lived in the Sacramento Valley. Tribal status was terminated by the federal government in 1959, resulting in the loss of 39 acres of land in Wilton. Tribal status was restored in June 2009.

Here's a better article from Sac Business Journal: http://www.bizjournals.com/sacrament...-location.html

It says it will include a 12-story hotel with 302 rooms, among more details. I'm not super familiar with Elk Grove. Would that be the tallest building in Elk Grove?

There are maybe 1 or 2 land-scraper type office developments at 4 stories. I don't think there's anything higher.

I have a soft spot for EG having partially grown up there. Its stucco suburbia sure, but very diverse, middle class, and there is a sense of community. I think the city has a good future ahead of it.

Cool, well it sounds like it'll be an interesting departure from the norm in Elk Grove then. I disagree with StayWest, and believe this will be beneficial to the city's growth and adaptation. Sure degenerate gamblers will flock out there, but so will the normal occasional gambler, who will in turn spend money at surrounding Elk Grove establishments that they'd not otherwise spend, and in turn will lead to more economic development in the surrounding area, if not the city as a whole.

Here is a rendering from BizJournals, in case anyone is curious:

Elk Groves white population is the largest it has ever been. They are not fleeing.

The U.S. Census says otherwise.

Here's racial mapping for the 2000 census:

And this is the 2010 census:

US Census says whites alone was 52, 000 people in 2000 for Elk Grove.

In 2010 white alone for Elk Grove was 70, 000.

That's not white flight. White flight is where the white population leaves.

Whites make up a lower % now, but that is because other group are growing faster. But all groups are growing in Elk Grove, because Elk Grove is a growing city. Sorry if that does not fit your little narrative, but those are the facts.
