Thinking about moving to Chico, CA from Dayton, OH. Can anyone tell me how much more things in general will cost in Chico? Very important to me, as my income is $18,000 per year with 2 kids. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You will struggle anywhere in California on 18,000 per year. I would suggest Ohio. Houseing alone will eat up more than half of that.

Once federal and state taxes get at you, you'll have around $10,000 left. Rent will probably eat up almost all of that.

Ouch! Maybe you'll make more in Calif then your Ohio pay? 18K is below the poverty line. I made 45K in Sacramento and was a single mom, I spent $1250 per month in rent

A cost of living Calculator says: I used Bakersfield because they didn't have Chico
Salary in Dayton OH:
$18,000
Comparable salary in Bakersfield CA:
$20,982.8

If you move from Dayton OH to Bakersfield CA...

Groceries will cost: 19.213% more
Housing will cost: 38.585% more
Utilities will cost: 15.281% more
Transportation will cost: 15.57% more
Healthcare will cost: 11.727% more

Not to sound so negative, but I think you posted wanting an honest reply. I would not move to Chico. Actually, I would not move to California. Twenty thousand dollars would not provide you with a good lifestyle. There are so many costs associated with living in CA, costs that most people don't even consider. We don't even fully realize how much cheaper things are in other areas. For instance, we have friends that recently moved to Oklahoma. From food costs to car insurance, they were amazed how much cheaper it was to not live in CA.

Take Care

On the bright side, Chico is a great town, and much cheaper than most of California. I just think it would be a struggle with that salary.

If you want to get out of Dayton which is depressed, think about something nearer like Indianapolis. Same weather but much lower cost of living than CA.

Even I would love to live in CA but even with our income, the costs are a killer. If my parents leave me their house I would still not consider it.

Chico is pretty but housing was well over twice+ what we would pay in Indianapolis.
