Well, did you see it?

I'm so happy Greta Gerwig made this movie. In her interviews, she seems so sincere, smart and humble. Like I said before, Greta is Sacramento through and through, and it shows in the quality of this movie.

Not yet. Will probably go to Tower Theatre next week to see it. I have really grown to love Sac so I cannot wait.

The New York Film Critics Circle voted for its awards Thursday, kicking off what will be a spate of critics groups weighing in on the best of 2017.

Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” a finely observed love story between a daughter and her mother, won best film.

Movie was all right--some of the set dressing and background stuff seemed to hint that Gerwig was more aware of Sacramento subculture than the interview mentioned upthread let on, but it wasn't really Lady Bird's worldview, which struck me as kind of sheltered, given a Catholic-school upbringing and growing up in a strugglingly middle-class neighborhood that's only "the wrong side of the tracks" compared to kids in the biggest houses in East Sacramento or the nouveau-riche of Granite Bay. The character of her older brother and his girlfriend seemed like they were goth-club kids, at least in mode of dress, and I did notice a Bikini Kill sticker on the wall in one shot (was it Lady Bird's room?), who were an Olympia band but came out to Sacramento a lot in the 1990s. Kind of surprised it wasn't a Tiger Trap sticker.

Also had a moment like the end of the film, where she says she is from Sacramento, and when asked "where was that?" she replies "San Francisco." When I moved away for college and told people I was from Citrus Heights people assumed that was somewhere near Los Angeles, so I told them I was from Sacramento, even though I had never lived there, because they (at least the Californians) knew where Sacramento was.

To be fair, most students in Arcata/Eureka are barely familiar with the concept of an analogy, hence the average SAT score close to 1000.

Tiger Trap had disbanded nine years before the setting of this film, wburg, when the main character would have been eight years old. My kids are pretty hip but they aren't following defunct local bands from a decade ago.

Bikini Kill had broken up a few years earlier too--maybe it was her older brother's sticker and they changed rooms at some point?

The coffee shop scene where Christine consoles gay ex-boyfriend is actually in South Pasadena, CA. As soon as I saw it, I knew. I spent A LOT of time there. I grew up near there. The place is called Kaldi. Many movies / shows are filmed there.

The mother daughter relationship in this film was interesting. I have a question about Miguel, Lady Bird's brother.

Spoiler
Was he adopted? Is that why Lady Bird's mother told Lady Bird that she had not expected to have any more children?

I can believe that. As someone who lived many years in Los Angeles(Los Feliz neighborhood) and I went to college at LA City College/Glendale College/UCLA. I often describe Sacramento as being very similar to Glendale-Pasadena-Burbank-Toluca Lake, in feel, vibe, neighborhoods.

The coffee shop is supposed to be New Helvetia on 19th street between L streets and Capital Ave. The building is early 20th century all brick firehouse, now one of Sacramento's best restaurants.

Four Golden Globe Nominations! and the Darling of the New York Film Critics awards!
