I've always been curious about this and I haven't been able to pinpoint it. This photo was taken from a pedestrian overpass above I-80 in Davis. If you look straight down I-80 from there you have a really good view of the snowcapped peaks around south Tahoe. If you look about 30 degrees to the north (so in a generally northeasterly direction), there's this lone peak with a lot of prominence that's currently completely white. Anyone know which one it is? I've been trying to triangulate via google maps but I can't tell for sure.

My guess would be Lassen.

I think it's Lassen, too. If it isn't, I've been operating under that delusion for thirty years!

Duh, why didn't I think of Lassen...I think you're right. Sierra Buttes would be possible in terms of trajectory but I don't think they have the prominence and the shape is definitely Lassen-esque when I look at photos of Lassen from different angles. Thanks!

Lassen Peak is about 5 degrees from true north. The path to Lassen Peak from Davis would line up just east of Sutter Buttes. The top 700 or so feet of Lassen Peak is line of sight from Davis. That, combined with the way the way Lassen Peak is built would make it hard to pick out without some sort of magnification (binoculars, telescope). The path between Davis and Lassen Peak also goes over the terrain of the southern Cascades, which blocks the view of most of the mountain. It would also appear just slightly above the horizon, so it would take an extremely clear day to see it.

Sierra Buttes is a little over 8500 ft high, there is less terrain in the way which allows you to see the top 1,500-2000 ft, 40 miles closer, and about 30 degrees from true north.

If you still think it is Lassen, I suggest purchasing a compass at REI, then drive out to Davis to find the bearing of that peak, then draw a line on a map and tell me what you come up with. Make sure the compass is set to true north.

Very interesting. I didn't realize the Sierra Buttes were that high. Thanks for the education.

Do you mean the Sutter Buttes? None of the pictures I can find of the Sierra Buttes area show a conical mountain.

The "Sutter Buttes" aren't high enough in elevation to warrant snow.
