We have had great luck with KOA campgrounds. I haven't camped in the ones around Sac. We wanted to get out of the city, so we usually went North or to the coast. I really like the Trinity campground. It can get really hot during the summer in the Trinity area. Lake Almanor has GREAT campsites. Most are private facilities with boat docks/launch, playgrounds, etc. Another of our family favorites is in the Redwoods. I included the links. If you are looking to escape the summer heat, then Lake Almanor and the coast are the best choices. Lake Almanor has GREAT 4th of July activities. The town of Chester is on the North tip of the lake. They have a 4th of July parade and its followed by a huge barbecue and street fair. Nearby, 12 miles down the road in the town of Westwood is the annual Lumberjack Days. So there is alot of fun family activities to do if you look for events.

I took my family to Yosemite and they loved it. If you go to the Yosemite Creek campground, there is a little stream near camp. Go in mid to late summer so it's not flowing fast. It's off the main road, down a little 5 mile dirt road. Kind of shady, but if you go slow it's safe. There are many people down there, so go early.
