I am moving to Sacramento this summer and noticed that there is a light rail line that runs from downtown all the way out to Folsom. A couple of questions regarding the light rail:

1.) Do many people use the light rail for commuting into Sacramento?

2.) Is it a safe and reliable means of getting around?

3.) About how far from downtown do you have to go along that line to find some good, safe neighborhoods?

1. Yes. It's actually pretty crowded during peak hours. It gets used all the time, but it doesn't run really late--and it only runs to/from Folsom until about 7:30 PM (it runs to Sunrise Boulevard, a few miles west of Folsom, until around 11:00 PM.)

2. Yes. If you're used to using public transit in other cities you won't have any surprises on Sacramento's light rail. There are occasional schedule delays but nothing untoward.

3. In my opinion, about a mile. I live two miles from downtown and love it here, but it's not for everyone. Next out on the Gold Line (the one that runs to Folsom) is East Sac, expensive and very safe, then Rancho Cordova, kinda middlin' safe with some not so safe areas, and then Folsom, quite safe.
