I was in the area earlier this week for a few days and never thought it would be as humid as the southeast? I mean not Florida humid , but unexpected.

Humidity in Sacramento is very low. It has been very, very hot, yesterday hit a second-place record for the hottest day in Sacramento ever on that date, at 113 degrees, but no, it's not as humid as the Southeast by a wide measure. Right now, humidity in Sacramento is 17% with a temperature of 101 degrees, which is very dry. By comparison, right now the humidity in Austin, TX is 56%, 76% in Orlando, FL, and 81% in Atlanta, GA. Chicago, IL has 84% humidity!

Humidity up there today was 10%. That's absurdly dry. My main experience with humidity is Chicago summers, and those feel dramatically different than California's hot & dry summers. But I suppose you felt what you felt.

We are in a heat wave currently. For the last 2-3 days Sacramento has been 10-15 degrees warmer than average.

Currently July 11, 7:45PM, evening

Las Vegas 111F, humidity 14%

Phoenix heat index 108F, humidity 23%, Dew Point 59F

Fresno 101F, humidity 16%

Austin heat index 94F, humidity 72%, Dew Point 72F OPPRESSIVE

Sacramento 85F, humidity 34%, Dew Point 54F PLEASANT
As Sacramento cools each evening, the humidity goes up but the dew point is still in the pleasant category.
The humidity coupled with dew point and temperature are still low enough as to NOT raise the heat index.

Dew Point Comfort Scale
Pleasant: less than 55F
Comfortable: 56-60F
Getting Sticky- 61-65F
Uncomfortable: 66-70F
Oppresive: 71-75F
Miserable:76F and higher

Still quite warm in the Sierra Foothills

Fresno 84F - A large part of the Central Valley does not receive consistent adequate cooling from the Pacific

Nevada City 80F

Sacramento 68F - Delta Breeze by way of the cold Pacific, Sacramento is in the Central Valley but it is also a "Delta Town", hence the dramatic cooling.

San Francisco 48F (feels like temp) - NorCal Coast can be pretty darn cold even in the summer.

In the Summer it's the Pacific Ocean that cools Sacramento by way of the California Delta, but that cooling rarely reaches Nevada City, nor the upper and lower parts of the Central Valley.

In the Summer, Sometimes the Sierras get thunderstorms and/or when monsoonal moisture makes its way up from the Desert Southwest. It can be briefly "humid" in the Mountains, but rarely to the point of it being uncomfortable or oppressive. Those monsoonal conditions rarely affect Sacramento or the Bay Area.

Hey Popwar,
You were/are in beautiful mountain country, but it looks like you picked the wrong time. I hope you still enjoyed it!

Sacramento 57F - Thank you California Delta for pulling in that Cool Cool Pacific air.

San Diego 67F - Funny how Sacramento is 85 miles from an Ocean Beach yet 10 degrees Cooler than SD.

Fresno/Central Valley 71F

Sierra Foothills/Neveda City 77F - The mountains east of Sacramento are 20 degrees warmer than Sacramento. (Humidity 19%)

It may have felt that way too you, but by no stretch of the imagination was it "humid".

The only time it actually feels humid in Sacramento is when it rains in the winter, and for maybe 2 days in the late summer, early fall when monsoonal moisture comes from Mexico by way of the Desert Southwest. Even those 2 days would be considered dry to everywhere else in the country.
