I've had an account with Sacramento Credit Union for 6 years. I'm happy with them they pay 1.76% on their checking account but it's capped at 15k, I keep more than that in my checking account (it's complicated, don't ask) So I went shopping for another CU with a decent interest rate and found Heritage CCU, they pay 1.51% up to 25k. When I opened the account they said their normal interest rate is 2.2% and they should be going back to that soon. They only have 3 branches but if one is close to you you might want to check them out.

The only downside is that both of those banks require 12 debit transactions in order to get that interest rate and I don't usually have 24 debit card transactions a month, maybe I will start buying a pack of gum every few days

(I'm not shilling for them and I don't get paid for posting this, just thought I'd pass it along)

Why not just open a savings account at the same credit union where you have checking? You can move money back and forth pretty easily with the online access. I use a different credit union, but when our checking gets over 6k, I move stuff over to the savings. If I need that money back, it takes about 45 seconds to open the app on my phone and transfer back from savings to checking.

I've never heard of a minimum amount of debit transactions. I use it occasionally at the grocery store or gas, then pay all my bills from there each month, so I guess 12 isn't a problem for me. That's strange.

Because the interest rate for a savings account @ Sacramento Credit Union is .15% vs 1.76 for their checking account. I usually do more than 12 debit transactions in a month but with two accounts I will have to do 12 for each bank. Have you ever checked to see what the interest rate is in your CU's savings account? If you do you might wonder why you are wasting time to move money from your checking account to a savings account.
