SACRAMENTO - The State of California is asking one of its former employees return a mere fifty-three cents its accidentally overpaid to her last September.

"The integrity of your payroll records and accuracy of your leave balances are critical to the Office of Human Resource," the letter, dated April 22nd, 2009, read. "A recent audit of your payroll records was performed. This audit revealed that an overpayment in the net amount of $.53 occurred for the 9/09 pay period(s)."

State Demands Laid-Off Woman Repay 53 Cents - 53 cents, Haackenson - KTXL (http://www.fox40.com/news/headlines/ktxl-news-overpaidworker0503,0,7687658.story - broken link)

This kind of attention to detail has allowed the state of California to escape the brunt of the current recession.

I cannot tell you how messed up some of the state payroll offices are. My husbands paycheck has been incorrect several times recently. Its all for silly reasons. One month no overtime checks were issued. Another month payroll converted half of my husbands paycheck into vacation time, then they didn't want to correct it. Last year there were 3 months in a row his check was short. Its not just my husbands check, its hundreds of employees at one institution. If the work was done correctly the first time, they would have saved hundreds of hours going back to correct all the mistakes.

The Franchise Tax Board came after me for $0.00, demanding immediate payment or they would come after me.
