I was born and raised in the Bay Area, lived in San Diego for 5 years, and now live in Roseville. I have loved all of these places, but I feel ready to leave California. We are thinking of Reno because we would like to live a slower lifestyle, be around friendlier people, and not have the state tax. Plus, it is still very similar to California. Am I right about this? Has anyone made this move and regretted it?

Have you been to Reno?? Besides the casinos

In my opinion - it's not like California at all , and defiantely a step down from each place you metioned you have lived.

There's got to be better places to live in Nevada

Downtown Reno is trying to revitalize itself especially with the construction of the new Reno-Sparks Convention Center. Otherwise, most of downtown is primarily the gaming industry and is pretty run down - think 7th and K in Sacramento. On the other hand, suburban Reno and the Truckee Meadows region can be quite lovely and still more affordable than here in Northern California. I like the openness of the region - the beautiful mountain views and much closer to skiing and Lake Tahoe. The valley there can get hazy in the summer but the air quality, overall, is far superior than that of Sacramento's. I always thought that would be a great area to buy a retirement property - especially further south off Hwy 395. On the south end of town you have the Meadowood Mall and tons of new retail and restaurants in that area. There is more to Reno than what meets the eye I always thought.

Thank you for your replies. We were looking into the Cold Springs area or Southwest Reno. I agree that there are some scummy spots downtown, which is why I would want to live further away from there. I just don't know if I would regret moving, but it seems like there are a lot of Californians moving to Nevada and they like it.

And isn't there a new riverwalk area in the downtown? that looks quite nice form photos I've seen. I think there has been a marked improvement since the re-routed the railroad away from the downtown area.

I just got back from Gardnerville, NV for a weekend visit with an old school friend who moved there in 95 from S. Cal. She loves it there, and it really is beautiful. What I liked about it , was the retail stores keep the western theme in their design, and everything looked kept up and clean. Also, the housing has a price range for everyone , and lots of newer homes. From what I hear Minden is also nice.

My sister lived in Gardnerville for a few years before she moved to Tahoe and yes, it is a beautiful area along with the town of Genoa.

I lived in West Roseville... Reno is like moving to Rio Linda, if Rio Linda had some strip malls and casinos... High Desert, VERY dry air, lots of crime (more so then here)... I work and stay there for a few days every few weeks... I pretty much have seen its pulse... I will wager you will not like it and be ready to move fairly quickly... jmho

i haven't read anyone elses reply buy OMG...don't do it! i moved from Cal to Reno and i hate it, hate it, hate it! people will say it's beautiful...huh,what? oh you mean all the places AROUND or NEAR here are beautiful. we used to take day trips to North Shore and Truckee, both about 45min. for us, but now because of high gas prices that's out.
it's so dry here that is sucks the life out of everything and then it's freezing in the winter. the crime is very bad and there are so many illegal immigrants that i get knocks on my door all day from them selling homemade goods or offering house cleaning. and i live in a brand new, very nice community just outside the city limits. there's really no reason to be here unless you gamble.
as for other californians moving here and liking it? i haven't met one. most transplants i have met in person agree with me and are moving back out of state as soon as they can, like us.
if you MUST move here, i'd still pick Spanish Springs (where we live) over any other area here.

Even though I like the Nevada high desert for visiting and enjoying the wide open spaces, the climate is nothing like most of California. Windy and dry. Real dry. And the winters are quite nippy and cold. It's a harsher climate overall. The closest thing it has in common with California is proximity. There really is very little Pacific Ocean influence on Nevada weather. The towering Sierra Nevada takes the temperate nature out of the climate.
