My family is moving to Sacramento for my new job at the old McClellan air base. We have a 10 year old, so schools are real important to us. We've always lived in urban areas and I don't like to drive, so we'd like to stay close to civilization. However, we want as much room as possible for gardening. I am thinking 1/3 acre minimum. We can probably swing up to $450K, but I'd prefer something well within our current means, so I am shooting for $300-350K. Size, age and condition of homes are less of a priority. Any ideas?

Lot size is a bit of a problem, but Citrus Heights, Orangevalle and Roseville have some properties that fall in the under $400K range with at least 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and an acceptable lot size.

But, that lot size in your price range will be a bit of a challenge, given your school and commute requirements.

Look around Carmichael or Arden-Arcade. There are a few back-street lots that date back to the era when half-acre lots were still common that haven't been subdivided. Either that, or take a look at Rio Linda.
