So I've read almost every posting here and I am still confused about what would be a good place for my family. We are relocating from Tokyo back to the states this summer and are looking for to live in a town that is safe with good schools but not to far that you are not able to regularly drive in to SF or SAC. Commuting is not an issue because I will work from my house, but close to an airport would be good.

Any ideas? need more info?

we will be visiting in July to get a better idea but I would like to narrow my list to 3-4 places,

so far

Folsom
El Dorado Hills
Granite Bay
Roseville
Mountain House

any other suggestions?

p.s we will probably rent for 1-2 years before buying.

You've listed very nice areas, but if access to SF is important to you than you might want to consider Davis too. Many of the areas you listed would put you an hour further from SF than Davis would, and Davis would provide as good an access to downtown/midtown Sacramento.

None have very good access to the Sacramento airport, you would need to go to Natomis or Midtown for that.

Granite Bay has a very good school system, one of the best. It is safe and has homes at price range of $600k to $6 million. East Roseville also is a very nice place to live, just make sure that the school system falls in Eureka school system. I live in Gold Rive and loving it. It is safe and close to freeways. Elementary school is one of the best in San Juan school district. It is About 35 minutes to Airport. Let me know if you like to have more information about any other area. I work as a realtor and am very familiar with the whole county.

Close to an airport I would suggest North Natomas. There is quite a bit more diversity in the area as well. I grew up in Roseville and specifically moved to North Natomas because we got tired of it taking 45 mins to drive to the airport twice a week for my husband.

Where we lived in North Natomas it took me 8 minutes from my driveway to the terminal to drop him off. We didn't get a ton of air traffic noise either.

Good luck!

btw..never heard of Mountain House...there is a Mountain View, but that is in the Bay Area.

Default Rocklin

Rocklin is a very nice suburb with lots of housing and shopping. However, your initial posting mentioned access to an airport, and Rocklin traffic is murder getting to I-5 via I-80.

Davis gives you a better shot to the airport in Sacramento, plus the airport option in Oakland, though it is about an hour and a half drive (non-rush hour). This maximizes your flight choices, plus gives you a great place to live, with their own lively downtown area.

But Rocklin is very nice if the airport isn't of that much concern.

You might want to checkout Woodland. It's just minutes south of the airport. I have not been there in a few years but it used to be a nice little town of about 45 thousand or so.
