I finally found a county where the list is open, and I'm number 293 on the list. They now say it will be close to 3 years for me. I cannot make it that long, due to the three SSI cuts this year. I cannot do any work whatsoever and I'm a 55 yo female. I was homeless last year for 9 months and never want to go that way again. I'm already using food banks to the max and am diabetic and very hungry all the time. Who do I write to to ask for help on this? My state reps? Federal reps because it's backed by HUD? County or city?

Your zip code indicates Yuba City. Have you tried to get help from Sutter County Social Services:

The length of the section 8 list varies by county. In some counties, the waiting list is several years and in other counties is several months or even less. Talk to the people in the county social services agency they may be able to tell you which counties have the shortest waiting lists. Then move to that county.

Once you have been approved for section 8, your approval status follows you and you can move back to the county where you previously lived, but now you have a section 8 voucher.

Have you thought about conventional housing?

In Oakland the Section 8 list varies from months to years... depending on eligibility and family size.

Conventional Housing is often available in weeks for those with acute need...

Well, you requested some advice without a lot of specific information, so that seemed to me to be a reasonable and proactive response based on your posting.

And per the thread referenced below, I beg to differ with you about my understanding of SSI:

heartfocus, you asked for help and then insult someone who actually took the time to research information for you. Even if it is not exactly what you were looking for, you could show a little appreciation for the effort.
