I'm considering a piece of land in South Lake Tahoe. Thing is, it's less than a mile from the garbage dump and the power line transfer station. The piece of land is at a good price; so now I'm leery. Anyone know if that chunk of Tahoe is totally undesirable or what?

Thanks in advance!

Quick details about this landfill... closed over 40 years ago, was once a superfund site due to contamination of mainly vinyl chloride into the ground water and saxon creek. Recent environmental work including a new impervious cap and other environmental remediation have been done as well. They plan on using the site for hikers and trails at some point in the future. I don't see this site being an issue for a piece of property a mile away. I also don't see what issues there would be with a power line station a mile away either. What are your concerns and why do you think that property pricing is related to the landfill?

A mile from those locations is not a big deal. In that area the bigger concern with bare land is whether or not you will ever be able to build on it.

Oh yes I forgot to mention what a PITA it is to deal with TRPA and the US Forest Service when it comes to developing lots, make sure you know what you're getting into if you haven't already had experience developing property in Tahoe. Tahoe is the only place I've ever had to deal with land capability, the process is very long and drawn out.

Thanks, thanks, thanks. I passed on the opportunity. If I had known the garbage dump was being rehabbed, I would have pressed for the property. I know the lot can not be built on right now, but that's because of the limits to permits in Tahoe.

People who live near powerlines are always complaining of headaches, the EMFs are crazy and it just doesn't come across as desirable to me. It would have been nice, though TRPA and fees would have put me in debt...

Probably would have been worth it.
