Just saw the heartbeat today (yay!), so now it's time to solidify our Dr., figure out the hospital, etc. I haven't been able to find too much "review-y" information so I thought this would be a good forum to try.

Any experiences with either location? Hear any rumors / hear from other people about their experiences? Know about the stats of either one? Helpful review websites? Other locations that you recommend?

I am hoping to go without medication, but we'll see. I want to be someplace where I can have access to top-of-the-line technology just in case (that tends to rule out Davis, even though I like the idea of tub birthing).

Anything that you have to share will be very helpful! Thanks in advance!

Sutter Memorial hands down over San Juan

But I had my child at Mercy General - which is just down the street from Sutter Memorial - and had a GREAT experience - why are you going to San Juan???

PS - at the time - I went 100% drugged birth. I didn't want to go natural. I am more flexible now to the whole birthing experience - but with drugs available.

I have been going to see a doctor with Camellia Women's Health, and they only allow you to deliver at Mercy San Juan. My general practitioner also has obgyn in his practice, and they deliver at Sutter Memorial.

Is San Juan known for being particularly bad? I really don't know because we are not originally from CA and have no family here, so have no experience with anyone going to hospitals around here. Also, we don't know the "buzz" that surrounds local hospitals. Completely unknown to us! Ask me about Ohio hospitals and I have the scoop, but that is not very useful to us right now!

Any buzz that you could share would be very helpful, even if just reputations (with no personal experience)! : )

We had our child at Mercy San Juan in 2003...Everything was fine and we had no complaints at all..Overall a good experience for us...I have no idea about Sutter, but I have heard good things about it.
Either way best of luck to you.

Sutter Memorial used to be called Sutter Maternity Hospital, so they've been in the baby business for a long time. I've pretty much heard only good things about them.

Two years later...

Update: I had my daughter at Sutter on June 24th, 2010 and it was a WONDERFUL experience! I HIGHLY recommend it there. The nurses were fabulous and we were treated so well. Awesome experience!

Just wanted to update.

Congratulations! Glad it was a wonderful experience and no doubt joyous as well. My wife is a retired, home birth midwife so we always like to hear of others' good results.
