I need to know about how I can break my house lease? I found out my roommate is an alcoholic and an addict. She stumbles around in a drunken stupor and I am afraid she is going to leave the gas on or burn down the house... What can I do, I fear for my safety? I wish I checked her out more before I moved in with her....

Stop paying rent and move. When and if she sues you, explain everything to the judge, and start documenting everything RIGHT NOW.

great idea..I would stay just long enough to do some documenting now, maybe a couple of weeks, then move. Yes, you might have some problems, and you might get threatened by your landlord, but if what you say is true, you certainly have every reason to move!!!

Good luck,

Nita

One possibility. If and when she gets totally out of control, call 911 and tell them you have a Health and Safety Code 5150 or 5170 on your hands -- mentally ill or drunk/drugged-out person who is a danger to themselves or others or unable to take care of their basic needs on your hands. Once that's documented, if they respond, you might be able to break the lease.

In addition to the response by CURMUDGEON...Since you are the "guest" room mate I would suggest finding another place quickly. If there is paper between the two of you then look through the signed lease for a clause that allows you to terminate without penalty. I suggest you talk to a Sheriff's deputy if there is illegal drugs involved...STAND YOUR GROUND: Friends don't jeopardize the safety & well being of friends.
