It would be interesting to learn how many readers of this forum are planning to retire outside of California and where they plan to go.

I for one do not plan to stay in California after I retire.

Default Texas!

My Mom has retired to Saginaw, Texas just north of Fort Worth. She moved out with us, but for her on her retirement, she is able to do more things than she would be able to in CA (where she was born and raised).

My husband and I will be retiring near Olympia WA. We haven't found the perfect spot yet but are looking at Elma, Shelton, Olympia, Montessano, and Harstine Island. Was considering Spokane, but found out it drops to -25 below in the winter. Yipes! It got to 9 degrees in Shingle Springs and we thought we were going to freeze to death.

Default retirement on the outside

my wife and I are looking in central florida to retire. I like to fish and some of the best fishing is there. it is close enough to the attractions so family can visit and still be within 1 hr. the beaches (gulf and atlantic) are both within 1 hr. and the homes are less expensive. life is more simplier.
good luck in your search

We are probably retiring to KY next year (although we still are considering VA: KY - 80%, VA - 20%). We love both places and have taken vacations there many times....there are things we will miss about CA - the ocean and our friends....but it will be such a big adventure for us to make such a big move...new places to visit, new house, new friends, more money LOL.

We only hope to be able to sell our house next spring - that is the only unknown for us at this point.

To rpow53,

I've read threads from other people who have moved out of Florida because of a high cost of living there. From what I've read, you may be paying "through the nose" for homeowners insurance in Florida. Good luck.

Default Retiring outside of California

Thank you to all of those who have replied to my original thread. I will most certainly leave California when I retire in 7 years. I will likely retire in Tennessee. The cost of living in many of the places I've researched in Tennessee averages 20 to 25 % lower than the national average. Property tax is cheap. There is no state income tax in Tennessee. I'll be looking around in Tennessee in August and hope to find the perfect place for my retirement. I'm originally from the south and I want to return to the kind of life I had before coming to California. If any of you want to learn more about Tennessee, check out the threads in the Tennessee forum.

I had a few cousins that lived in Nashville. They loved the area. I hear that is very beautiful there.

I retired to central New Mexico four years ago and am glad I did it for the following reasons:
* Friendly people
* Reasonable cost of living
* Rich culture
* Incredible vistas

I just retired and my wife retires in about 18 months. We are definitely moving out of CA. We have explored several different states. Have not firmly decided yet. Looking for a more retiree friendly state.
