I grew up in Lake County and spent Summers in Santa Cruz. I have been in Atlanta for the last 3 years to finish school. I had a full ride to UGA and decided to check out the living enviroment here. It is cheaper housing, but everything else is more expensive. For my lifestyle cost of living is the same here and in the cheaper areas of California. The big difference is the wage scale and Georgia is a right to higher state. Higher paid employees are being laid off and replaced with temps everywhere. I have decided to move back towards Yolo county with my two boys, 8 year old and 2 month old. I am a single parent. I am very liberal and like a very stress free life but still want city convience. I like farmers markets, shopping, and fun free activities. I like the community feel, but like to live in apartments with a pool, gym, and free child care included. My oldest son likes skate boarding, science museums, and dave n busters. The baby who knows. There are three places in Yolo County I am interested in Woodland, Davis, and West Sacramento. The last thing I remember of Woodland is driving down I-5 and a rest stop. My friends all say it is huge now, but I can't picture it. Can some one please break down the culture, family activities, and other interests of these areas. Cost of living is not an issue., but I am only interested in Yolo County. Thank you.

Davis sounds like a great fit, however the cost of living is expensive. The farmer's market is divine (Wed. and Sat.), there is always something going on, and the schools are superb.

Woodland has grown, but there are a lot of problems going on in the city. The crime rate is through the roof, the schools aren't so hot anymore, and there is a lot of gang activity. If you check out the town's newspaper Daily Democrat online, they usually list all the arrests and crimes, followed by comments from townsfolk about how bad the town has gotten, etc.

It's sad as I grew up in Woodland, but it's changed so much. It used to be a really nice, safe ag community.

If you have to live in Woodland, I'd check out the newer areas...there are some nice neighborhoods in the Spring Lake subdivision that seem relatively untouched with crime. It's off of road 102 and a hop, skip, and a jump to Davis.

I currently live in West Sacramento and it has been growing. There's currently new shopping centers being built on Reed Avenue where the New IKEA, Walmart, Home Depot, Golden 1, Taco Bell, Ross, etc. Which is great. There's a new section in West Sac that is booming called South Port - New Homes, they just opened a new H.S there, tons of new shopping centers, it's like a new little city.

West Sacramento to me is great because it really is like it's own little city away from Sacramento. It is separated from the City by the river. West Sac is only a few minutes from Down town and a few minutes from the Natomas Area (lots of entertainment spots there, shopping, restaurants, etc).

West Sac is heavily diverse however, there is a huge Russian community here. You have a huge new Russian church and tons of Russian operated businesses. The reason why I prefer West Sac is because it's own City, but it's not tiny or small like Davis or Woodland. Also, it's so close to dtown Sac or other Sac areas.

It sounds like Woodland and Lake County where I grew up are a lot alike. It is exactly what I do not want. Thank you for the insite. I have seen many of the people I grew up involved in the gangs, tribal casino wars, and alot of those still living there are addicted to one thing or another. I was reading an article online talking about how there are so many closed businesses now in Woodland. They built the city up and had no means to maintain it. It is sad what people are doing for money to these small charming towns.

I love the post on West Sacramento. I did end up choosing West Sacramento. I liked an apartment complex in South Port called Savannah at Southport. I liked how you can walk to everything. The elementary and middle schools are close enough to walk to, as well as the local park. The apartments themselves were at least 1000sqft and include free childcare. With its prime location I can visit the places I like in Roseville and Davis yet still keep my kids in a decent area. I ordered the visitor packets from Yolo County and they have West Sacramento on the map, but nothing written about it. I found that so odd. Again thank you.
