My husband and I are relocating and found a rental home in South Salem. The house is gorgeous and is located on over an acre. All the homes on the street and surrounding area are beautiful, but there is a prison not far away. We have small children and I am wondering what your thoughts are about the area. Do you think it is a good place to raise kids and what are the schools like? There is possibility that we could be purchasing the home in the future.

Thanks for your input!

You need to be a little more specific about your location. I don't know of any neighborhoods near the state pen that match your description. Are you talking about the correctional institute out towards Turner? That would jibe better with the one acre lot and beautiful homes. It used to be known as the Prison Farm, and is a medium security facility that doesn't house dangerous criminals.

DOC Operations Division: Prison Oregon State Correctional Institution

You should probably just go knock on some doors and talk to some neighbors.

Yes thank you for the correction. I just saw the sign of Oregon Correction Facility and assumed it was a Prison, but never looked into security level. It is North of Santiam Hwy, South of State Street and East of Four Corners. So that would make it just North of Turner on the East side of I-5. I hope that clarifies a little better.

Thanks

Well it depends on where you are out there. What you call south Salem may not be what locals call south Salem. If you are on acreage, you can either be in south Salem schools (generally good), Cascade school district, or an east salem school district. Just depends on where you are really located. No one cares about the prisons.

It's a lovely little area that you are considering. I have friends who live out there, and they love it. I will say that I wouldn't send my kids to Auburn School, but I'm picky when it comes to schools.
