I am just full of questions today and exploring things for our move. I really want to take the kids to the beach after we settle in so please let the ideas come rollin in So far I have looked at Cape Lookout State Park which looks beatiful. I would love to find a beatiful coastal area the kids and I could take pictures and explore our first Coast Trip in Oregon! So what is the best Beach to explore, view, scenic wise but not over 2 hours away? ( if possible) So far it says that Lincoln City is 60 miles. Thank you in advance.

Start with a trip right out of town on 22 to Lincoln City and the "D" River Beach. About 1 1/2 hours from Kiezer.

Take a loop Drive to Newport and back on 20 thru Corvallis.

South to Eugene and out to Florence and the Sea Lion Caves, Honeyman Park, The Dunes, and several beaches. Come back thru Deadwood and up thru Monroe and 99 West.

I like Waldport from Lincoln City and back thru Philomath.

And you must do Florence South to the Redwoods and the California line.

How far are the redwoods? Would that be more like a whole weekend trip with the family? I think the Lincoln city one you speak of sounds like a great day trip. I am certain we will have a few trips this summer and every summer there after for these wonderful scenic get aways. I am a firm believer of letting my kids explore nature. So I am all for going new places. heck my 8 year old loved stopping at the rest stop on the drive up to portland full of trees and free coffee ( for me of course).

Redwoods ..... It is an easy daytrip, but long. Come back up thru Grant's Pass and I-5. Or get a Yurt for $40.00 a night in the woods, and the kids will love the stay. Stop at Paul Bunyan and Babe The Blue Ox. For a weekend I would go as far as Babe the Blue Ox, and stay in the little motel there at Trees of Mystery, or a Yurt in one of the state parks, and come back the next day up I-5. Maybe even a stop at The Oregon Caves. About 300 miles up US 199 and I-5 and about 325 down the coast.

I personally wouldn't do the Redwoods as a day trip with kids. Most Salemites head to Lincoln City for a day trip. It will take you about 1.5 hours depending on how much traffic is at the Casino on the way.

The coast isn't really scenic there but the D river that Steve mentions cuts through the beach and makes for warm water and great playing for kids that age. Bring sweatshirts, buckets, several changes of clothing. The coast is quite cold so playing in the ocean isn't really a great option. You have to watch out for sneaker waves if you let them go in the ocean. Kids can play there all day. If you plan to stay there late, bring boogie boards because as the tide comes in, you can "surf" the D river. We go there a lot despite the fact that the coast isn't the most stunning there because the D River gives the kids warm water to play in. It's only about 10 feet wide or so and maybe 3 feet deep at the deepest part of it.

Unless your kids like to spend a lot of time in the car, I'd stick to one locale as driving along 101 can be slow going.

There is an ice cream/salt water taffy place right across the road from the D River Beach.

D beach sounds fun and perfect for the kiddos. I have been warned about sweaters and rain boots too haha. And I am certain they would love the Salt Water Taffy stop too. I look forward to sharing our " new arrivals" pictures with everyone as soon as we get there.

Don't forget to hit up the Newport Aquarium.

If you're looking for scenery (at least what I consider 'good Oregon Coast Scenery,') you're going to have to go North of Lincoln City, or south of Florence. South is the Oregon Dunes, Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia then some really rugged coast south of Coos Bay area. North of Lincoln City you have some really good coastline all the way up to Canon Beach.

Another good day trip, but perhaps a bit long, is to go I-5 to Portland, I-90 to Astoria, then drive all the way down to Newport or Lincoln City then home. I tend to do this trip all the time.

Also, be sure to check out Mary's Peak but watch out for the ant hills. Not close to the coast, but you can see it on a clear day from the top, and it's a nice easy hike through there.

Some other links: Map of Lighthouses on the Oregon Coast

Look for the Oregon Coast Magazine for sale at cash registers at grocery stores. Don't bother with a subscription as it's VERY repetitive, but it's a good magazine for newbies to the Oregon Coast.
