Someone told me that "Salem is a bigger city with a small town feel. The various parts of the city are so spread out & so different that they can feel like smaller cities in a bigger city"

What do u think?

Thanks!

Salem is pretty spread out, but it doesn't feel like one of the serious big cities. Nothing like NYC or Portland or Seattle.

But it isn't nearly as big as those big cities, either. Salem is basically a moderately large town and that is exactly what it feels like. I suspect that there are no buildings over 2 stories, except the hospital. There are no parking issues. Traffic is not small town, but it isn't big city, either.

There is a normal downtown and the usual shopping centers.

Shopping and medical are better than in a small town.

Perhaps it feels like a small town by comparison, to anyone who has just left one of the great big cities?

We have buildings over two stories.

I'd say that is sort of true because it is so slow paced which is more inline with small town life. I'd say east Salem feels like a different city than the rest of Salem but I don't think the city is spread out for its size.

To me Salem feels just like any other city of the same size. Like many Oregon Cities it is somewhat wooded, but nothing like Portland. I find for it's size Portland is one of the most wooded cities I have ever seen.

Just so you know it is Oregon law that when prisoners get released they have to be returned to their home county. They don't get released here unless they are from Marion county.

Near a prison is the safest place to be. They don't hang out around them released or escaped.

The prison inside Salem is actually rather attractive looking and I've never heard of any problems caused by it. I wouldn't decide against Salem because of the prison.

I'd be more worried about the politicians then prisoners personally.
