Planning a move in June. Trying to get a good idea of the nicer neighborhoods/areas of Salem and the surrounding areas. Since we are a distance away, I would like as much imput as possible. It will all depends on the job I get (it may be in Salem or Portland) but I would like to weigh out all my pros and cons before I accept an offer. Thanks for your help. PS I am sure this question has been asked a billion times. PSS- looking for imput from similar backgrounds, mid 30's, with kids from a mid sized town in IL (120,000).

There are lots of nice areas in Salem. Where you want to live is going to depend upon where your job is located and how much you can afford for rent.

You say "mid-sized town" but in Oregon that would be the 4th largest city by population. Salem is 2nd biggest at 160k (virtual tie with Eugene).

Really can't recommend commuting to Portland from Salem (esp since the nicer areas of Salem would generally be considered to be West or South Salem, West in particular adding to the commute time), but certainly a select group of wholly insane people do it.

Generally speaking, west and south are the more desirable areas of Salem due to the schools, but there are pockets of not so great spots in there.

What is nice depends on what you can afford and what you like. Do you want a neighborhood with new construction, vintage homes, mid-century modern homes?

Hello Everyone, our family is looking going to come up for an exploratory visit this summer and around November/December. If we feel Salem is a good fit for us we plan to move up in 2017. Since we're out of state, we are hoping to get some recommendations in regards to reputable rental agencies in Salem that we can work with. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

In Oregon, people don't work with rental agencies to find long term rentals. They go on Craigslist, Hotpad, Zillow, etc to find homes that fit their criteria and then they call the owner/property manager to arrange to see the house. Sometimes you'll get lucky and a property manager might have more than one house you like, but often if you like 10 different houses, you'll need to call 10 different property managers to be able to see each house. Once you find the right property, you'll arrange the terms and sign the lease with the property manager that manages that particular house. The bright side of this arrangement for you is that you won't pay any commissions for a rental; the property manager gets paid by the homeowner not the tenant.

We don't have rental agencies here.

If you google "property management Salem Oregon" you will get some of the larger property management sites in town. You have to call them directly to see the properties they manage.

At least in Portland/Medford/Eugene online property listings on a Prop Mgmt site are pretty common. I haven't looked at any of the firms in Salem. I do check yelp/google ratings, but to an extent they aren't entirely reliable.
