WE are considering these two areas and would like to know about any problems or positives with the air or well water in these areas. My wife has asthma so the air quality is vary important to us. We like to raise chickens and such so will be looking outside of town in areas that we can do that in.

Lebanon is the only area in the mid-valley that has well contamination issues that I am aware of. Some Jefferson wells have sulfur so you'd want to add a filter on it if the well doesn't already have it.

There was one well in Aurora that tested positive for arsenic so it has an osmosis pump on it. In Oregon the seller is required to test for nitrates and coliform bacterias during the sale of the property, and you can also ask for lead, arsenic or whatever else you want.

Typically I'd say the quality of the water is good.

As for air quality, I think the biggest issue will be when they do some field burning. I don't think we are as bad as Eugene, but since you are looking at being rural that may be an issue. We live in Salem proper and my hubby has asthma. He really doesn't have any problems. He's pretty mild though.

His allergies on the other hand, do flair up in spring and fall...

Given those parameters I'd pick Salem.

The quality of well water varies enormously. Iron bacteria are a common problem with wells in the Willamette Valley. Low flow is also a common problem in late summer in certain areas (mostly where there is a lot irrigation-dependent agriculture).
Most cities in Oregon will allow chickens (not roosters) in the city limits.

Right now Salem has a chicken ban within city limits but their is a group trying to allow residents to have 4 chickens (no roosters) within Salem city limits.

As Steve97415 well flow is an issue in some areas. You will see many wells with large storage tanks to compensate for flow issues.
