Looking into a job in Ogden. Would appreciate any info anyone has about the area. Crime, cost of housing, commuting, neighborhoods, etc. Potentially moving there from Tri-Cities (southeastern) Washington.

Thanks ahead of time!!!

I don't live in Utah yet, but I've researched the Odgen area fairly extensively.
Crime? Lower than most places (of similar population) in Texas, Higher than most places in Utah. But not that bad and the rate seems to be dropping.

Housing? Reasonable especially rentals.
Commuting? The light-rail commuter train to SLC will be there in 2008!
Neighborhoods and most questions have been covered. Just search this forum for "Ogden" and you will find the best neighborhoods.

Hope this helps,

Trebek

We've lived in Salt Lake area for 8+ years but husband now works in Ogden and we're considering moving that way. He's absolutely fallen in love with the city and working with the local civic/business leaders, he said there is this energy and excitement about what Ogden is becoming. I see Ogden as having neighborhoods that are older and some pretty run-down. The crime rate is higher than where we live now but still much lower than most of the country. Ogden is definitely more racially and religiously diverse than many Utah neighborhoods. Cost of housing is less than Davis or Salt Lake areas. Like anywhere, there are better neighborhoods than others, but definitely plenty of safe good housing. There is some major revitalization going on downtown and the Historic 25th street is just cool! A brand new movie/recreation complex just opened there last weekend. There's a movement to build a new ski resort with a gondola that will actually take you from downtown or Weber State University right up to the slopes. That's a ways off, but it does appear that this city, which many Utahns look down their nose on, is making giant strides in the right direction.

We've been here a month and a half (from Philadelphia), and we're closing on a house in Ogden on Tues. The place rocks, and now seems to be the best time to take advantage of a good thing while Utahns still have a negative view of the place.=

Good luck, and we're all here for specifc questions.

Ogden is gross. Dont go there. surrounding cities are fine, if it has an ogden address stay away, only because it will be too hard for you as an outsider to choose wisely, and it would suck to get the wrong area in ogden.
Plain City, North Ogden, West Haven. If you can get in the school area where your kids would go to Rocky Mountain Jr High, and Fremont High School youve picked well. Otherwise, Weber High or Bonneville

Your standards are way too high.

There might be a few neighborhoods in Ogden that I wouldn't stroll out to at night, but they're few and far between. Ogden is probably the most crime-ridden city in Utah (except for maybe western and central Salt Lake City and West Valley City), but that's not saying much.

Cost of Living is very low, and the commute isn't bad. (If you stay away from Riverdale Road.)
Crime isn't bad, except in certain areas. The areas you want to watch out for are West Ogden, and The downtown area between 24th and 30th streets From Washington Blvd. up to Harrison Blvd. The rest of the city isn't bad at all. Most of the city has a cop on every corner... (Except west ogden... I'm convinced that they are afraid to go there... )

Default Moving to Ogden for a year

Thanks for all the info on Ogden. My husband and I will be moving there in early December to oversee construction on a new food distribution facility just northeast of the Ogden airport. We are looking for a two BR, two bath apartment, preferably on the first floor. Washer and dryer in unit is a must. We have no kids or pets, but have family members who are eagerly anticipating our move to Ogden so they can come see us and ski!! Can anybody recommend a good apartment complex in the area? I've already checked Apartments.com and have spoken to people from several complexes but I prefer hearing from the general public. Thank-you in advance for any input or advice.

Oh- forgot to tell you- Out here people use the classifieds on KSL.com, which is a local TV station. We were used to the cityfolk using Craigslist back east, but it's a bit different around here.

Rentwise, you may be more comfortable looking at Syracuse and Clearfield. There are tons of rents in Ogden, and they tend to go towards a bit lower income/ more diversity, which you may not be used to.
