Middle-aged woman considering relocation to SLC. Would seek shared living or apartment in safe and pleasant area. What areas of SLC should be avoided? What areas are safe and affordable with a small-community vibe? Is Sugarhouse one? Thanks!

Many will love to argue this till the cows come home. Whether it is petty defense of an area they like or not. Statistically what WILL show up as the "good vs. bad" areas is not unlike so many urban areas. In the case of the Greater Salt Lake area the East side remains the safe area from the North to the South pretty much with South Salt Lake and a portion of Sandy to be excluded. Sugarhouse, East Millcreek and Holladay being highlights as would be Cottonwood Heights as well. The west side I'm sorry to say is best avoided from the Airport to at least 70th South, where it becomes increasingly less urban and more suburban and safer, along with the demographics more highly families and less singles. This is a very general comment on what you've asked, but for certain you would be well served to avoid places like Kearns, West Valley City and Taylorsville, South Salt Lake and a few others. Otherwise you're likely to be fine. Yes Sugarhouse would be high on the list of recommendations for your desires.....

Try Criagslist for shared housing to see what's being sought and what is available. Students digs go around $200/mo up and more adult quarters start around $400/mo.
