Hello All - My husband's next duty station will be Hill AFB this December. I am an RN and have started to look at hospitals to work at. I am quite shocked to see on one website a starting salary of $20.75/hr!!! Here in CA I am making $39.00/hr. I expected it to be less, but not quite that much.

Does anyone work as an RN or know someone that does? Can you quote me current salaries (I have about 2 years acute care experience). Also, any hospital recommendations (University of Utah hosptial is standing out so far) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Jen

Hi~ I am a fellow RN from Texas and we are also moving to Salt Lake City. My husband is in the Army and will be doing recruiting there. I was wondering if you had found out any information about the Salt Lake City Hospitals pay?
Thanks,
Lisa

I'm afraid that wage is about right. If you work for a staffing service you'll make quite a bit more. Of course you'll then work all over the valley and your schedule isn't set, but it might be worth is for $35/hour. I've worked in several states--Idaho, AZ, New York and I know that sometimes there are hospitals that you definitely want to avoid. However, after living here for 8 years, I haven't found that to be the case. I'd choose based on your specialty. U of U has the region's burn clinic and gets the big trauma cases; Primary Childrens, of course, for peds; St. Marks for cardiac care. I like smaller community hospitals so I've worked ICU and ER at 2 different hospitals in Davis County (about 10-15 minutes north of SLC). At one, I worked their prn pool but specified only ER shifts. That bumped my wage up another $10/hour. There are great smaller hospitals all over the valley and traffic can be a beast, so check close to where you want to live too. I love hospital nursing, but if money is the biggest concern I've been told by friends that you can make more doing home health or charge nursing at nursing homes. I personally haven't checked into that, but know several nursing friends who went that route. Good luck!

Sorry, I just noticed that your husband will be at HAFB. University Hospital (though great--very positive personal experiences there) would be quited a commute. I worked at Davis Hospital in Layton and many of my coworkers and patients were from the base. It's very close. It's a smaller community hospital so traumas and very complicated cases get sent to SLC. However, the environment was good and pay was comparable. Ogden is a little north of the base but has 2 hospitals, both larger than Davis...McKay Dee and Ogden Regional Hospital. Several friends work at Ogden Reg. and are very happy there.

thank you for your replies. I don't mind commuting - I lived in Los Angeles prior to this, so I am sure a SLC commute is nothing compared to that!
