Hi all,

I'm moving from Toronto to SLC with my soon-to-be husband in July because he got a great job at the U. We're planning on finding a place to live in Sugarhouse or the Avenues.

I have just been offered a job at what sounds like a very interesting company. The office is located in Riverton. I have two questions for you.

First, how long does it realistically take to drive from either the Avenues or Sugarhouse (say, around Liberty Park) during rush hour?

Second, they are offering only 5 days of vacation! After two years it becomes 10 days. This sounds obscenely low to me. Is this typical of employers in the SLC area??? Other than this I'm really excited about the opportunity. How many public holidays do you get?

Thanks for your help!

Unless it's federal employment, you get July 24 (Pioneer Day). When I worked for LDS Hospital, as I remember, we got all the usual holidays. Judging by what you are going to get, I'd say that is a small family-run company.

If you live in the Avenues or Sugarhouse and you're driving to Riverton to your job, there really shouldn't be much of an issue if you work a typical 8-5 job since you'll be driving south in the morning which is opposite of rush hour traffic. I'd guess not more than 15-20 minutes from your home to your work.

I work for local government so I get a lot of holidays off--which I would gladly give up for higher pay. Each private employer is different so you'd have to ask your employer which ones you get off paid.

I hope you and your husband like it here. Good luck with your move.

My wife and I live in the Aves and we love it... Probably a 5 min drive to the U campus. You're probably looking at a 30 min commute from up here. The drive to I-15 is the most frustrating as you have to stop at every other block for a red light.

30 minutes and the vacation time seems low. Riverton is the exact opposite of Sugarhouse/Avenues. Sugarhouse will be easier though as it's next to I-80. I live in Sugarhouse and work in Draper. It's about 25 minutes of drive time.

Thanks everyone.

I'm trying to negotiate more vacation time, but I'm leaning towards accepting a job at the University that offers 15 days of vacation time plus other better benefits. The only trouble is the actual work may be less interesting.

We're moving to Utah partly for the amazing leisure activity possibilities, so it's all about work-life balance, no???

I would think that it is more about job security in this day and age! Don't get me wrong, I like some time off too but the way things have been trending the last 3 years, stability in the job place trumps days off!
I agree with most of the posters on your commute time. Maybe,, you could talk your sweetie pie into an area a little further south so the commute is "evened out" for both of you!
