Utah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"As of 2007, 60.7% of Utahns are counted as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, although only 41.6% of them are active members."

"Mormons now make up about 34%–41% of Salt Lake City,"

"According to a report produced by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life the self-identified religious affiliations of Utahns over the age of 18 as of 2008 are Latter Day Saint movement 58%"

Yes, but I am a Roman Catholic transplant who LOVES it here! I am a practicing Catholic, who lives in a very, very, very LDS neighborhood that knows & accepts our religion & that we are not converting, & welcomes us to play basketball & help w/ scouts (hubby) & come to halloween & relief society events (me) . & the bishop & his family reached out to us when a criminal stole our truck from our driveway & broke into our home. Maybe I'm weird, but, when the bishop of the church & his wife came up to me w/o my hubby (who is way more active in the local church) it really warmed my heart that they really cared about us & our family. Utah is a tight knit community, in a good way. IMO. =)

How open are these people to non believers/people who aren't that religious?

You know if you read these boards there are so many opinions on completely opposite sides of the spectrum. People saying they were totally ostracized in their community to others saying it is completely welcoming. You kinda attract what you give out ya know. People pick up on vibes and if you come into a place with a certain attitude its most likely to stick no matter what.
Utah is a wonderful place. Are there cliquich places. Most definately. Are there self righteous people. Most definately. But for the most part its as much if not more welcoming than many other places. The other thing too is you gotta give some to get some. I mean you can't come here and expect everyone to welcome you with open arms if you don't do anything. Sometimes Utahns need a nudge to open up. It does depend on where you live too.
I think if you pick a good place to live and come with a good attitude your experience will be great.

Since there are about 1.5 million of them I imagine there is 1.5 million different degrees of openness. So far I have had no issues.

Go out and find some *Mormon* people around the area where you live.
Ask them if they have a copy of *the Book of Mormon* for you.
Now go to the back of the book, and read a section,
called *The articles of Faith*.
Those *Articles of Faith*, are the basic tenets of the church.
When you do read them, you will notice that LDS people (mormons),
are admonished to be open to other religions.
While you are *at it*, read the whole book ! Quite an interesting read.
Nuff sed .

WOW just browsing though different forums, as I am planning to move, and not that I was considering moving to Utah I was curious to see what people would be discussing in this forum and from what I see Utah seems like a totally different world. A city full of oddball-ish type people, no offense. Do any black people even live there out of curiosity, or is it a mostly homogeneous society?

Can you elaborate on this at all?
