Hello,

My future roommate and I are looking for housing in Salt Lake City. She's a native of Utah, and I'm from New Mexico. We've been looking profusely for housing options to consider, but perhaps you could offer some help?

We're both Young Adults (18, 19) and both of us have been independent for awhile. We figured out the most we could pay was 900 with Utilities a month, and are looking for a 2 bd/2 bth house (Of course if push comes to shove, we can always share a bathroom). I'm a city person, I love not always having to rely on a Car and was an avid Bus Rider for a long time, but then again I lived in the Center of a large city and it was very easy to get around. I would love to live Downtown, especially because next year I will be attending UU but my Roomie is worried about high crime, and being two young women, it's semi understandable. I however have a very large dog and have always felt safe in the middle of it all.

So we've kind of hit a wall here. Can anyone recommend some good areas to look for housing? Or give the insight on living in Downtown SLC? Or just advice on the housing overall?

Thanks!

High crime in downtown Salt Lake? Nope. If you're looking for a house as opposed to an apartment, I'd look either in the area between downtown and the University of Utah or in the Lower Avenues.

Everything east of Main Street in downtown should be safe enough, and you would have access via TRAX to UofU. Actually, there are some nice apartments around the Gateway mall, so that's west of Main St and should still be a decent place to live.

I would imagine the main problem with the 2 of you living in downtown might be the cost. I am sure there are a lot of cheaper options closer to the UofU campus.
