DH is considering a job in SLC. I've been reading pros/cons here - very interesting. We would likely not sell out entirely and move as I have a good job where we live now. So if he were to take this job he would likely rent a place and we'd kind of live between two places - which we have done before. If you were working near N Temple and US-69 and also going to the airport a bit where would be a good place to live? He'd rent an apartment, condo, etc. - something with no maintenance responsibility. He's a very active, social person and we like nature or urban life but not suburbia. My understanding is there's no good urban kind of living in SLC so that seems unlikely. We have good income between the two of us so could afford a nicer area. I just have no idea about different areas in SLC. I did read that it might be nicer on the east side and the airport is on the west but the work location seems to be in the middle. Ideally he'd prefer a short commute but would compromise on that for a decent place to live. What do you think?

I couldn't find US 69 on the map online. Where is that? There are quite a lot of apartments in the area of S Temple/N Temple/State St/over to the university and up in the Avenues (north of S Temple). There is a large grocery about 300 E and 300 S and a Harmon's (excellent local chain) is opening in the City Creek Center. If there is anything ready, City Creek Center would be ideal. It's a mixed use development going up in the center of the city. None sure when the 1st phase is scheduled to open. http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/5...-lake.html.csp

Not sure what kind of traffic you are used to, but going out to the airport from town is going against traffic during peak hours. I live near 2100 S and 1300 E and it takes me about 30 min to get there. He would need a car for various shopping, unless he likes walking in heat and snow.

City Creek Canyon in the Avenues has hiking, also the Bonneville Shore trail runs along there. The areas in Big Cottonwood/Little Cottonwood/Millcreek canyons for hiking are probably 30 min from downtown.

US 69 appears to be N 3rd West - near the Discovery Gateway. As I have been looking a little more it appears there are some apartments right in this area - by this Discovery Gateway. He has always liked the idea of walking to work. What is it like near here?

The Gateway is kind of upscale set in a transitional area. Right around it is OK but 3 blocks away is the homeless clinic and park where they hang out. No trouble right near the Gateway or in it AFAIK. I go to the movies there frequently and also eat there at times. I love the Tin Angel which is across from that park but they have their own parking-food is fabulous!

Correction - my location was wrong! I didn't realize the correct address is in North SLC not SLC proper. So what is NSLC and surrounding area like?

NSL has some very lovely oil refineries to look at as your gaze falls to the West, North West and a nice smell to go along with them..

Okay - good to know. DH said office is in an industrial area so that makes sense. We've talked about the fact he probably would not want to live near the office. So that said It seems that there are nice places to live in SE SLC that are maybe 15 miles from where his office would be and not more than a half hour commute. So where would be a nice area for 50 something guy who likes to be outside, run, play tennis and probably eat out sometimes. Nicer rental - condo, townhouse, apt - something with no maintenance. He'd like a walkable urban type area but not a must. Would be nice to live in an area with similar types vs families.

I'd suggest Sugarhouse. Parts of it, at least, are close to freeway access. It would be easy to get to North Salt Lake within 15-30 minutes. The demographics there are varied. You'd find a lot of younger people with families, but also older, retired couples and everything in between.

Okay - thanks - I will take a closer look around that area. I saw that area recommended in another thread. Good to know it wouldn't be a bad commute. I drive 22 miles and 40 minutes now so that doesn't sound bad at all to me.
