Dish or Direct TV? (renting, house, purchase)

I've kinda ruled out Comcast, as I hate them to no end for their poor customer service. we just moved here from California and I can't tell you the pain I went through with them to disconenct service and return hardware. Now we are looking at Dish and Direct TV, does anyone have any advise here? I will have two TVs conencted day one, I want HD and the DVR option and to be able to play the recorded show in either room. Down the road, I will add a 3rd TV to another room.

I had Directv for 3 weeks. It was fine until we had a light snow and it was out for the entire night. As I was lied to about prices when ordering, I was able to get out if it. I have zero interest in going outside in the cold/snow to brush off a dish. I scurried back to Comcast. The local store is fine.

Are you happy with teh HD offerings from Comcast? I may need to look at them again... The house I am renting right now has Dish, I'm getting to like the menus and layout.

There are a lot of HD stations. Even the non-HD ones look good on my HD TVs

I would probably choose directv over anything offered there. I used to work for dish network when we lived there in slc. Its not a bad product but unfortunately they dont have a true multi room dvr. There dvr's are dual tuner so one tv (the one with the box) will be in HD, the other tv that shares that same box will be in SD.

directv also runs some better specials usually.

As far as comparing comcast vs directv. The picture quality of directv is going to be a little bit better. The downside is that you may have to go out and brush off the snow in the winter (or you can purchase a dish heater that will warm the dish and melt the snow off automatically). The benefit to comcast is phone/tv/internet all on one bill and usually ends up being cheaper when you bundle your stuff together.

I'm not religious about any of the companies really, but having used Comcast and Dish Network before am now most satisfied with DirectTV. I'm not thrilled about he prices for the service as we don't go whole hog on the pay channels, just one level up from the basic for some of the interesting channels. The strange thing is when we had Dish Network during the winter the service went out multiple times every time it would snow, it was annoying to say the least. And as Belle pointed out had to go out and brush snow off the dish. With DirectTV for some reason it is more immune to the issue. I haven't had to brush snow off the dish YET in 3 years of service, and have noted snow being on the dish, but it doesn't seem to matter as yet. so all in all I'd go DirectTV.

your post is almost word for word what I was told last night by my next door neighbor. I was also shown how the 2nd TV splits off the DVR and is in SD, not HD. I am finding more and more that Direct TV may be the answer. I just can't get the smell of Comcast off me, they just don't deserve the business... and their DVRs are outdated.

Heheh, My husband has done work with all 3 companies you mentioned. Hands down, the best deal is with Comcast *if* you want/need all three products they offer-- tv, internet, phone.

I'm going to ask him his thoughts on Dish/DirecTv, but when we visited his mom this past he said that Dish Network is a good service, but DirecTv is better-- and they cost a little more.

Comcast isnt exactly cheap for a cable company though, atleast there. Here, in tampa I work for the major cable company and we offer digital cable (hd is free and it has ALL of the channels other than the movie channels), 10 mbps internet and digital phone for 99 a month. So, in comparison dish is expensive here (which, along with the fact that it goes out whenever we get a typical florida storm is why almost nobody has either dish company here).

Just go with directv, if your already unhappy with comcast nothing they will do is going to make you change your mind about them at this point.

Also, dish and directv are both just as prone to the signal fade issues with snow. Your dish may not have been aligned as well by the dish network tech as it was with the directv but there almost identical platforms sending your signal down.

So are these the only 3 that we will have to choose from in UT? We haveVerizon FiOs here & love it. Will be moving out there this summer. Was just wondering what cable co. are offered out there.
