If you made good money with a very promising future (you and your spouse both) in your careers but lived in a place you didnt really care for, would you choose to stay or move somewhere else and risk starting over to be in a place you both really love??

I'd go for the place I loved. I wouldn't even have to think about it. Of course I'm saying this assuming that even though I might not be able to make as much money living in the place I loved, I would be able to provide for my family and not be destitute.

I'm with Katzpur on this one. Being miserable where you are will lead to depression and eventually marital troubles.

and I think your dead on with that.

It would mean leaving one family for another so either way someones missing family. I never really thought of that as a cause of marital troubles but as you mention it, I think you might be on to something!

We did it...we moved from a state where DH and I both had good jobs to a state where we had to start over. Never looked back either...Besides, there is nothing saying you can't have it both ways. You could start over and could have a very promising future there too!

Here is one of my favorite poems:
TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth; 5

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same, 10

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back. 15

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Maybe it's because a lot of us don't drown our sorrows in drink. There's got to be some way out of depression.

haha, no kidding.

Florida is great for a lot of people, I just cant take year round heat and I dont like the ocean. Thats really what it has going for it. I constantly have headaches because its SO BRIGHT outside and I have to take 2 showers a day (atleast) because going outside for any amount of time equates to you being drenched in sweat for 3/4ths of the year.

I'd certainly take place over money.

Having said that I admit that when I graduated from college in Texas I moved to Chicago for a job. I left ALL my family behind and it nearly killed my folks. However, I was able to transfer back home to Texas after a year. Chicago gave me the beginning of a 37 year career, fantastic benefits and a civil service pension I would have never dreamed of if I had not moved to Chicago all those years ago.

BTW, I loved Chicago but it was never "home" to me.

If you are not happy where you live then the rest of your life can go down hill PDQ because we all need a nest that is safe and comfortable for us.

Katzpur - I loved your answer to the antidepressant question.

Here are my ideas why:

1. Heavy cultural expectations on men and women about how they should and shouldn't act that often cannot be met. Women feel pressure to maintain a "perfect home and perfect children". Men feel pressure to get married and support larger families at younger ages than elsewhere in the USA. Its not considered acceptable to express your unhappiness or lack of satisfaction with any facet of life because of religious values that focus on the need for "gratitude".

2. More physicians per capita and more ease on the part of patients in seeing a doctor who will prescribe these drugs.

3. More physicians than in other places in the nation who view anti-depressant medication more favorably.

4. A greater percentage of the population insured by health insurance plans that are willing to pay the cost of anti-depressant medication.

5. Less cultural stigma against taking anti-depressants than elsewhere.

6. A population with a heavy percentage of those with Scandinavian ancestry. (Some groups are thought to be more genetically predisposed to depression than elsewhere. Those who are from places in the northern latitudes tend to experience depression more commonly)

Utah does rank well, overall, as a healthy place. However, there is no point in pretending we don't have problems. Depression is probably higher here than elsewhere. We'd be better off facing it and trying to deal with it than to pretend everything is A-ok.
