Hi

We will be relocating from New Jersey to Farmington in June and I am concerned about my kids..ages 16, 12 and 7 making friends (myself too). I have spoken to several LDS people who have been very nice, but honestly said that it can be difficult at first because everyone knows each other through church activites etc. Does anyone have an opinion about public schools versus private schools?

Jeannie

Hi,

We'll be moving to UT (not sure where yet, but Farmington was a choice) in June also! I have a almost 12 yo boy (b.day is in July). I'm hoping that it won't be too difficult making new friends for him & us. PM, if you'd like.

I'm in South Davis, not far from Farmington. My kids have made lots of friends, most not from "churchy" families but some are... like racial issues kids don't care, only their parents seem to (and thankfully those people are getting rare these days).

Neither you nor your children will be shunned like lepers. Don't loose sleep over it.

We moved from NJ 18 years ago. I have two daughters, 15 and 11 and they also have plenty of friends. I wouldn't worry. Birds of a feather flock together...your kids will find friends through other things that interest them (sports, school, ect).

As far a public/private schooling...my kids are in public school and do quite well. Many public schools here offer concurrent classes with several colleges for upperclassman in high school. Several also have an IB program available. Although Utah ranks one of the lowest in per pupil spending, they also have one of the highest graduation rates in the country. It isn't how much you have, it is what you do with what you have that matters the most.
