I am being considered for two positions, one in SLC and the other in Riverton.

From what I see it would be too much of a hassle to commute to Riverton from Salt Lake City?

I am a bit worried about the air quality, people keep talking about. Would living in Riverton let me escape that? How many months out of the year is it? I mean NYC is pretty bad, the humidity plus pollution from everything, especially cabs is terrible.

SLC & Riverton are within 20 minutes of each other. Not really much to consider commute wise unless 20 minutes seems too long for you to be in the car.

As far as air quality goes, SL city and Riverton would have the same air quality on any given day since they're so close to each other. You could look here for more info. Use the search feature here at CD and type in "inversion" in the Utah forum to get info on winter time air quality. If you don't have respitory problems, and you don't intend to exercise outside during bad air days, you should be fine. I'm a life-long Utahn and haven't experienced any health issues related to bad air days. I've lived in both Salt Lake and Utah County. You'd have to go up to the mountains to get out of the "bad air" in the winter months.

Here's some information on temperature inversions and the accompanying bad air that might be useful to you.

Aren't they usually used *in* homes ...

We have two of them and each time I clean them, I am amazed at how dirty they get !

The ones we have has a primary filter, then the electronic filter and then finally a charcoal filter.
The primary is always just icky, and the electronic one is really black.

I never have. When I had central a/c installed 2 years ago, I got a high efficiency filter which improved the air quality in my home. I change that once per year.

Don't forget that most of the "pollution" that you breathe comes from inside your home to start with. Paints, cleaning products, carpets, air freshners etc. are usually worse than any inversion...
