Hello, I am looking at job relocating to Salt Lake City in 2 years. I am a US Citizen and I currently live in Alberta Canada with my wife and 2 kids. The company I work for operates in Salt Lake as well.
In doing research about the city what areas should we avoid looking at as far as living? What are the best neighbor hoods but are also reasonably priced as well.
We are looking at having to rent for a little bit and then buying a house.
Just looking for some tips and info about the city, thanks.

Where generally will the job be? Budget for rent? House or apt?

The short and easy answer is "East". Most areas on the far East side of the Valley are good areas. Eastern Sugarhouse, Far East Millcreek, Holladay, Cottonwood Hts, Draper are some examples. If you use Google Maps satellite view you can pretty easily see the nicer homes as you zoom in.

Thanks for the tips, it's looking like we might be relocating to MT instead. My husband would be working for Rail Serve (locomotive operator) if we choose to move to Salt Lake City. We are still undecided but thoroughly researching each place to make sure we choose the right location to raise our family.
Thanks again!
