I had a real eye opener this last week. I had to travel back to Chicago to attend my mother's funeral, so it wasn't a good reason, but flew into O'Hare and rented a car. I got a real eye opener driving in the Chicago area. They are truly on an entire different level of BAD compared to us here in Utah. Yes we drive too fast here, yes we have a bit of a "me first" attitude so some measure of defensive driving is recommended. But oh my when you get behind the wheel in Chicago you'd better put on your helmet and dual reinforced seat belts. They are unreal aggressive. They lane change in the blink of an eye turn signal optional. They fly in front of you from NOWHERE and cut right in front of you. Slamming their brakes and horns all the time. But I saw a maneuver for the first time. It was called "now we will invent a lane" as in one that doesn't exist, until of course they decided to invent it. You can have 2 lanes but if they decide they want to get in front of you (and most do) they will creep up on your side (if they can fit or not) where there is NO lane and wait for the light to change accelerating (they hope) past you. I never saw this one before last week, and the Chicago drivers seem to really like this one. They also pass on the right if they can in most any situation as normal. Double and triple lane changes with little or no notice is the norm at high speeds. Especially entering a freeway. The last and not least their traffic jams are legendary. I spent 2 hours to go 30 miles at an average speed of 5 MPH. In a pinch on I-94 they were using the side emergency lane to drive when possible. It's just plain insanity by our standards. Oh well. Guess you won't see me commenting on the Utah drivers anymore. Those Chicago drivers have reinvented how to drive crazy

Sorry about your mother. Try driving in Mexico City or Paris - I have done both and it was scary.

Yes, sorry about your mother too. Anyway, yes about Chicago. And every single thing you saw I see daily commuting in NY area except congestion isn't as bad (at least where I tend to go). So having driven in SLC too I found the whole "bad Utah driver" thing to be very overblown.

Almost all *comments or impressions* from people about almost anything in Utah, are mostly *overblown*.

Had to go to California for (also) a funeral, and when we came back, I needed a long time to get over *being a nervous wreck* from driving there !

Crazy drivers, everywhere !

I bet you could go on any one of the various states' forums here on City-Data and find a thread about how drivers in that state are the worst in the nation.

Sounds like my experience driving in Jamaica. I literally stayed white-knuckles the entire time I was there. Crazy lane passing on skinny 2 lane roads where your only option to avoid crash is to fly your car off a cliff, and other fun adventures. Everyone honking, nobody caring about lanes, etc. Sounds just like your experience! ps and sorry about your mom.
