Careful with that logic. By the same token you'd question the positive comments about good jobs, economy, great outdoors, etc? Maybe what you mean is "poster made a silly negative remark, therefore I question his other negative remarks as well but we'll let the positive ones stand." More questionable in my mind are the provocative posters with no other posts. T R O L L

My first impression of Utah after I moved here from NYC was a really good; clean streets, nice people (in comparison to New York), plenty of jobs. But don't expect people to be black friendly. Utah known as a white state with a white population over 98%. I remember when I just came here I saw maybe 1 to 3 black people in the entire area (and they were African students). After the Katrina screwed southern states, many blacks came from Louisiana and not all of them were nice. We got some black gangs with drugs and other crap. Police worked pretty nice and it's became much better, but people still don't like to be near blacks even if you're the nicest person in the world. Also, as a non lds I have little respect to their religion. Yes they're saying that their religion is very tolerant, but it's a bull. They will tell you really nice things in your face, but behind your back will judge you.
Although Utah is a really nice place. There are plenty of jobs, affordable housing and a very beautiful nature (Moab, Bryce, Zion and mountains if you like to ski). Another good things about Utah are nice roads and low taxes (at least I know where my money goes) in comparison to crappy California or the East coast. Among the negative things here (I found the only one) IT'S BORING HERE (no wonder why it's number one state in the US for an antidepressant usage). Utah is ISOLATION, the closest city from here is Vegas (about 5-6 hours to drive).
Another thing I wanna mention here is that Salt Lake is a ghetto and if you want to live in a better place, anything to the south is much better like Draper, Sandy, or Utah county.
So if you like an affordable place to live with a plenty of jobs and a nice nature (fishing, skiing, hiking) you will like it here. If you hate isolation and like traveling, you need to find a better place.

Again, this is only my opinion based on my 8 years in Utah.
Respect.
Total troll post. Been here a week and can easily say this is false. You sound like someone whos never even been here.

Regarding your statement about the homeless... If you are LDS and the member of a ward the church (and other church members) will take care of you. I have a good acquaintance who became homeless and the elders of her church paid for her deposit on an apartment, purchased furniture and appliances for her and brought her food. Mormons will, and do, take care of their own. If there are homeless people on the street they are not LDS. My guess is even if you are not LDS and go to the church for help they will help you. You might have to convert first, but hey, there are worse things.

You simply have to work at the Bishop's Storehouse if able to and you will get food.

First off, converting to any religion for any reason other than that you believe its doctrines is stupid. Furthermore, the LDS Church never, ever tells people (or even implies), "Convert to our faith and we'll help you."

That's right.

That's right.
Sadly, I have met numerous people who are members solely for the help. You can go ask for help as a non-member and then receive that help if you convert. Maybe that wouldn't work in every instance but it is a common thing.

Even better. I'm glad to hear that.

I'm not saying it never happens, but when it does, I'd say it's more likely due to a misunderstanding on the part of the person seeking the help. To begin with, even though the Church does its best to help those in need, its resources are hardly unlimited. Obviously, if a bishop has to decide between disbursing funds to a needy member of the Church or to a needy non-member, it's pretty much a no-brainer who's going to be first on his list. I can see someone putting 2 + 2 together and figuring, "Well, I'll join the Church and all my financial problems will be solved." They may find this to be the case in the short term, but even the most compassionate bishop is going to draw the line somewhere. The goal is to help people to become self-sufficient, and most bishops (especially in areas where there's a lot of poverty) are pretty astute at seeing through people who are just looking for a handout.

My comment still stands. As soon as I see a laundry list of logical fallacies about one issue, I have to go back and analyze the rest of the issues. Doesn't mean that the person won't get one right every now and then, but it means that their reasoning might be suspect.

See, what I'm thinking is that if you are just visiting Salt Lake City, you will likely run into as many non-Mormons as Mormons (since the population of the city is about 50% - 50%). Have you given any thought to how you're going to determine who's Mormon and who's not? Are you just going to go by who's "socially awkward" and who's not? And what qualifies a person as "socially awkward" anyway? Once you decide whether a person is "socially awkward" and therefore Mormon, are you going to take any steps to determine whether you were right or wrong? Are you going to ask? (Sounds a bit "socially awkward" to me. )

Seriously, I do hope you enjoy Salt Lake City. Should you end up visiting the LDS Church Office Building 26th floor observation deck on a Monday afternoon (1:00 - 5:00) or the LDS Conference Center on a Friday afternoon (1:00 - 5:00), ask to meet Kathryn. I'd be happy to give you a tour you'll thoroughly enjoy.
As much as you don't want to hear it those of us who are not LDS CAN tell. We know you are not the ones wearing a sleeveless shirt, with shorts above your knees......lol
