Hi everybody,

I am a 24 year old male college graduate relocating from NH to Utah. I have never visited Utah but have been researching Salt Lake City for months and think it'd be a great place for me. I am athletic, love the outdoors, love skiing, and would prefer to live in a more conservative city. I am making this decision because my family no longer lives here and I am desperately in need of change. My reasons for leaving NH are related to a forgettable childhood, lack of friends/family, and just the fact that I don't fit in with the drinking/smoking lifestyle most kids my age pursue.

I have some job prospects and have a large amount of money saved for this move. I will start out by staying in a hotel and then finding someone who wants to rent to a roommate. During this whole process I will be applying for jobs.

I have a BS in accounting and finance and 2 years experience in the financial industry. I am also chipping away at a MS Finance, so I think I will have some opportunities to get a decent job.

Also- I am an atheist, but do not disrespect religion in any way. Will this be a problem?

Will I fit in? Is this plan reasonable? Please give me any advice you may have. Thank you!

I think you will fit in fine. Not everybody here is Mormon or even religious at all. If you like the outdoors and are looking for someplace conservative, "This is the place."

(I would suggest that you ask our moderator to move your thread from the Utah forum to the Salt Lake City forum. You might get a bit more information that way.)

All I can add is Utah is not New England by any stretch of the imagination.

You have a good plan, money saved, are educated, and seem to be a realist. All good things.
You love the outdoors, skiing, are athletic and want a conservative city. You will do great in SLC for 3 of those 4 things. If even SLC is a little too liberal for you, go suburban (southern) Salt Lake County. But that's not fun for a young, single guy--especially an atheist; it's considerably more LDS out there.

If I were you, I'd forget the "conservative city" bit and just enjoy SLC, liberal as it may be.

It's hard for me to imagine that Salt Lake City would be "too liberal" for anybody except the super-super-conservative.

I agree, Katzpur, but the OP specifically mentioned wanting a "conservative" city and for someone from out of state who may think ALL of Utah (including SLC) is overwhelmingly conservative... SLC's definite blue streak (democrat mayor in city and county, large concentration of gay people, etc.) may surprise!
