Anyone have recommendations? Our friends like Jack Mormon. Anyone have other recommendations for specialty shops for good whole bean coffee by the pound?

Ghe ghe ghe ...
For what it is worth, I put "coffee aficionados" in the same category as 'wine' and 'HiFi' people.
They all have a certain taste preference ...

I buy my coffee at WINCO (of all places !)

They have a good choice and I actually found (took a while) one that I like!
You can buy as little as you like (which was what I did), just make sure you mark the bags with the type of coffee you have in the bag.

If you like, you can then have it in the whole bean version or ground to your liking.
If you have it ground, make sure you 'clean' the coffee grinder of most of the remains of the previous grind!

Crazy that some people are willing to wait 20+ minutes to get their coffee green and then have it roasted and ground and finally brew a cup to "enjoy" at Jack Mormon Coffee ...
I have been there once and once is enough, since twice is once too many times!

I completely agree with you. And the prices are insane - $16/lb! I buy my coffee for under $4/lb. But he's going to a dinner, and he needs to bring something nice, and I know that they like specialty coffees.

Disclaimer, I am no coffee aficionado. But, searching on Google maps, "The Bean Whole" has good reviews.

Hi, Parent. Not sure if you're looking for Utah coffee specifically, or just whole beans in general. I don't know what stores in the valley carry it, but I've liked Park City Coffee Roasters. I know you can get it at the groceries in PC. Their beans are from all over, but apparently they roast it. I liked the Locals Blend.

Down in the valley I like several of the coffees from Bad A$$ Coffee (don't know if C-D will let me spell that correctly). They're on State, around 3500 or so. All of their coffee is from Hawaii. Some is really expensive, but a lot is reasonable. Big variety, too. All of it I've had is really good.

Sometimes I'll splurge, but I'm the only coffee drinker in the house, so it lasts me a really long time. Mostly, I get Wide Awake coffee at Macey's for $5.99.

""All of it I've had is really good. ""

Tells me, you have tried them ...

Yet you also tell me that you buy a certain coffee from Macey's at 5.99!

So it is a certain coffee you like because of the taste!
The price is really not relevant...

The taste you look for is a very personal choice.
Same with me. I like my coffee a certain taste, where "you" may find it horrible ...

I happen to like my coffee the Dutch way where they call it "Koffie verkeerd"
In English, "coffee the wrong way" (Hot milk flavoured with a coffee taste)
Certain types of coffee just are not suitable for my mixture!

The Dutch Koffie Verkeerd is like the French Grand Crème, the North European Café Au Lait, the German Milchkaffee, the Swiss Café Renversé (about 60% milk, 40% coffee) and the Caffé Latte.

Back to original post, it is thus important to know what the 'receiver' of the coffee present likes.

Irman, the OP only asked for recommendations of whole bean coffee. They also mentioned price, as $16/lb is insane and they pay about $4/lb themselves.

I mentioned what I liked, and price as well, since the OP mentioned it.

Is there some other particular reason you needed to call out my opinion as not being pertinent to what the OP asked?

I’m also not a coffee snob.

You can always try Rimini at 532 South 400 West. It’s been forever since I’ve bought their coffee directly but I remember it being tasty.

We have recently discovered Black Rifle Coffee company blackriflecoffee(dot)com. We really like their Just Black (JB) roast. You can buy online and have it shipped or buy from their factory location (they're located at 1144 South 500 West). They have some brewed coffee in the lobby area which I presume is for tasting.
Bonus that they're veteran owned and hire vets. But the quality of the products brings us back for more.
