We are transferring from Maryland to SLC and was wondering what the best place to live was with a 6 yr old son. Also, are there decent shopping areas there??? We are non LDS, and also is it going to be a major culture shock for us? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Where would your job be located? Are there any areas that you are looking at in particular? There are tons of areas that would be great for a six year old, but then some that I wouldn't want to live (mostly downtown).

It WILL be a culture shock! That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but something to be aware of. There is also some decent shopping here, but nothing like the malls back East. Seeing I hail from NJ, I know what great shopping should be. Southtown Mall in Sandy, the Gateway and the Tangier Outlets in Park City are all pretty decent.

You'll find many wonderful neighborhoods here that would be great for your son. Actual location will definitely depend on your home preferences...size, budget, etc...and what kind of daily commute you want.

As far as shopping...it's funny...my total Nordtrom / Neiman Marcus shopaholic best friend from Los Angeles always makes sure we have "shopping time" when she visits here because there are lots of fun and unique boutiques (that aren't nearly as pricey as LA boutique prices) that are filled with items from local vendors and stuff you don't see anywhere else. Another fun place to shop in addition to the great malls listed already by kaytidid is Gardner Village.

Welcome to SLC! I just moved here from upstate NY last Aug. This place is a bit of a culture shock. Just wait until you see the covered up Cosmopolitan and Shape magazines at the grocery check out lines!! Drives me nuts!

Anyhoo, I'll get off my rant. As far as housing, look in Sugarhouse, the Avenues, anywhere on the East side, Cottonwood Heights, Fort Union area, Midvale.

For shopping, definitely check out the Gateway, the outlets at Park City, and Fashion Place mall. Go on Sundays...all of the LDS folks are at church or at home with the family, so there is hardly any traffic at the stores!

Good luck with the move :-)

My husband said its like on California something or nother..lol..I'm not to sure...His company is footing the entire bill and we are used to paying a ton of money for places out in Maryland. I did a cost of living comparison and it seems for instance out here making 25K a year you would only have to make 18K out there. What can you get for like 1400 a month?

California Ave? That is an industrial area, so there would be some sort of commute necessary in order to find a nice neighborhood.

1400 a month could get you a pretty nice place. Are you looking to rent or buy? I would tend to look at West Jordan if you wanted Salt Lake County. Foxboro subdivision in North Salt Lake if you wanted Davis County and Stansbury Park in Tooele County. Any of those would be great for a young child and it would put you about a 30 minute commute (give or take).

You may also want to consider SOME parts of West Valley... That would make a short commute. I would recommed between 5600-2700 West and 3500 to 3100 South.

That depends on the district. In Tooele County, their half day is on Wednesdays, but I believe in Salt Lake, it is a half day on Fridays. Tooele County is lacking in shopping, so West Jordan or North Salt Lake would probably be a better idea.
