magna isnt a bad of a place i lived there six years of my life, though I've lived west of state my entire life
I think the worst is the amount of drug dealing.
if you dont feel safe walking the streets then you got problems.
Though if want to avoid "Sketchy" people then avoid Valley fair mall.

Sandy got rated one of the top 10 safest cities in the USA this year. Draper is right next to it, and I lived there for a few months...its very new and nice. Herriman is a new area too, and they are still building a large percent of the town. There isnt a lot of crime heading toward Provo area. Cottonwood Heights is really nice, but more east. Midvale is eh, not that great. West Jordan is way nice. Its really west but super new and nice. I have a friend who lives in a gated community over there.

Default areas

I grew up in Sandy and really liked it but when I go back to visit I think it is really congested. They have a lot of conveniences such as theatres, mall, convention center, etc. The closer to the mountains you get the more expensive the area it is going to be. I have lived in West Valley the last 10 years and have really liked it. You will probably see it come up in the news a little more often but it is the 2nd largest city in the state. Lehi itself is going to vary in housing prices, same with Eagle Mountain. Highland, Alpine, Spanish Fork, Lindon, Draper, and some areas of American Fork and Sandy are going to cost more. but they are all pretty nice.

Default Interesting...

I've lived in many of the areas mentioned in this thread. There are areas of nearly all of them are are a little "seedy". I honestly think that the people who are hardest on certain areas of town haven't spent much time there and are just repeating what they've heard or what sounds intelligent. The whole western area of the valley is building up and becoming more new than old. I grew up in Murray which is a wonderful area of town. When it came time to purchase a home I CHOSE to buy a place in Magna. It is still close to down town (thanks to the 201 Highway) yet it is far enough away from city life to be relaxed and comfortable. Kids run around playing without major supervision and I feel very safe here. I see as much graffitti and mess in the Sandy area where I work as I do in my own neighborhood.

I think it boils down to "If you look for it, you will find it." I'm sure that the people with million dollar homes on the east bench don't want to accept that their neighbor could be dealing drugs down the street. Horrifying!

Honestly when you compare all of salt lake to the rest of the country there really isnt a 'bad' area. For Utah standards there are a few places you dont really want to go, but when you compare them to the rest of the nation they really arent that bad. i personally like Sandy, Draper, South Jordan and west Jordan to redwood road. In general I have usually stayed out of West valley City, Kearns, and The western part of Taylorsville, although there are some good areas to be in all of these locations.

Wow... what are you reading? On the whole I'd say you're pretty misinformed about the greater Salt Lake City area. I grew up in Salt Lake City and have lived all over Salt Lake Valley... I've also lived in several other big cities across the country... including Las Vegas, Buffalo NY, and Washington DC. Right now it looks like I have a job opportunity that will take me to Detroit, MI.... if you want to talk about a city that has a real problem with crime/robberies... just check out the Detroit, MI forum.

Here's my take on Salt Lake.... I live in East Sandy... near the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon... the area I live in would be considered a high-end neighborhood.... but I can't think of a TRUE GHETTO area in all of Utah... there isn't a street in the entire state that I wouldn't walk down during the daytime hours. Yes there are some pockets of downtroden areas in magna and some parts of West Valley and Kearns. I lived in West Jordan for a time and I also rented a place in South Salt Lake... there are some neighborhoods that are more "white trash" than others... and certain parts of town are obviously going to have less petty crime (break-ins, etc.) but on the whole... Salt Lake City is probably one of the safest metro areas in the country with over 1 million people...

Remember... it's all relative... for the commenter who grew up in a midwestern town with only 50,000 people... yeah... I understand why you'd feel more vulnerable to crime in Salt Lake City... but if you want a true comparison take a look at Buffalo, New York.... Buffalo is virtually the same size as Salt Lake (metro area)... and while there are some wonderful suburbs in Buffalo.... half of the Buffalo proper is filled with blight. Even Austin, TX... considered a thriving, white collar town.... which also happens to be about the exact size as Salt Lake (metro area) has just as much a problem with crime as Salt Lake City.

As far as the areas you're looking.... you'll find that Draper, Sandy, and South Jordan are filled with wonderful neighborhoods. Money magazine has listed Sandy as one of the best places to live in the entire country. Draper and South Jordan are primarily "new money" communities with newer homes (many of them very large). Sandy is a little more established... and has some wonderful neighborhoods. There are perhaps two smaller pockets in the boundaries of the three communities you've mentioned... that I would avoid if you want to stay away from middle class... slightly more trashy areas....

WHITE CITY... located around 9600 South and 1000 East is a older and poorer community... I don't think crime is especially bad... but it's a neighborhood that I wouldn't prefer.

OLD SANDY... an small neighborhood around 8800 South and 300 East is also an area that I wouldn't prefer.

THE BEST AREA... I would look into the northeastern neighborhoods in Sandy... Willow Creek Country Club area... some of the nicer... more established neighborhoods in the Valley. Also... don't hesitate to look in Cottonwood Heights... wonderful and safe community that is very close to all sorts of shopping and outdoor activities. I also really like the are in South Jordan near 11000 South and 1000 West.

BEST OF LUCK

I live in Sugar House and feel very safe here as a single woman. I would advise anything east of 1100 East as "safe." I have friends in the Avenues who feel safe also.

The sketchy areas of SLC are Rose Park, Glendale and to an extent downtown west of about 200 W. Magna is a [mod]cannot inappropriate language[/mod] and BTW is contaminated by the Kennecot Copper mine. Best places to live that will be pretty similar to cities in [mod]rude[/mod] states are the Avenues, Sugarhouse, 15th and 15th, Harvard/Yale, Millcreek/Olympus Hills, and Cottonwood Heights. Sandy would be great [mod]personal attacks[/mod]. I live in Cottonwood Heights near Willow Creek and Big Cottonwood canyon, I used to live in Sugarhouse which was great when I was younger and not married. Then we wanted more space and to be closer to skiing/climbing.
