Does anyone have any good recommendations on a furnace repair place. I phoned one place and they said it would be 79 bucks just to come out and do a diagnostic! Is this the going rate for just coming out or could I find somewhere cheaper? Thanks for any suggestions.

I have used both Whipple and Nearings in the past but they are not cheap. However, they always fix stuff on the first trip and leave my house clean. I've heard good things about Manwill's. I think in this case, you really do get what you pay for.

Very few companies can afford to send someone out for free and then have you turn down the job. Most places will quote you a fee to come out but if they do the job, that is not extra. It does cost gas and wear/tear on vehicles to get around this big valley!

Hansen HVAC just did some work for us a few weeks ago. We were more than satisfied and would definitely user them again. We had them come out and give us an estimate on a job and they didn't charge us to do so.

Clough Mechnical has done good work for me. Charge $60 to come out. An older guy, who is the owner, comes out, not an inexperineced kid.

I don't know exactly where you live. North of Salt Lake in Davis County we have Dick Kearsley and Associates. They aren't cheap, but they are honest and they don't overcharge. They've straightened out problems that other contractors could never quite figure out.

You can always find it cheaper but is cheaper really what you want when dealing with contractors? If you want the cheapest look on Craigslist or KSL. That's where you'll find all the guys that work out of their garage and don't have insurance or pay taxes.
From my experience you have three different types of service contractors in Salt Lake. The cheap ones as noted above. Then the professionals who are broken up into two groups. One group quotes a cheaper price to come out but always seem to "find" something that needs to be fixed and usually it is not cheap. Then the second group that seems to charge enough up front so the don't have to "find" something.

I've had good experiences lately with Whipple, they've installed two furnaces in rental houses I own and they were fast, clean, and reasonable.
